How to Refill Your Ink Cartridge and Recycle It

The best way to re-fill an ink cartridge is to buy an ink re-filling kit. This can be bought from any online store selling ink cartridges. Along with this kit you would be provided with the necessary tools along with a set of instructions on how to go about filling-the-empty-ink-cartridge.

Here are a few simple instructions that could be followed to refill your cartridge and it’s not very complicated.

1. Draw the ink of any one colour with the help of the syringe provided in the re-fill kit. Ideally, this should be done over the sink. This is to make sure that even if some of it spills over no documents, clothes etc. gets ruined. The amount of ink each printer holds usually varies depending upon its manufacturers. For Example, in most Epson printers the black cartridge holds about 17ml of ink and the colour cartridges hold approximately 8ml. Please refer to the instructions on your refill kit to check how much ink should be injected into the cartridge.

2. A small hole needs to be made on top of the cartridge (Could be done with a ball point pen), one for each colour chamber. The hole should be at the top of the cartridge near the label. The needle should be pushed into the hole and the ink injected slowly. If the ink is not injected slowly, it could result in foaming and air bubbles could be formed. If this happens, the re-filled cartridge might not be able to print.

Caution: If this happens, hold the cartridge over a waste paper basket upside down and swing upwards and stop suddenly. This could rectify the problem. If it doesn’t then you could clean the ink heads with cleaner or try soaking the heads. This could remove any dry ink that is clogging the ink heads and allow the ink to flow freely again.

3. The re-fill holes need not be sealed, as there are already breather holes on top of the cartridge.

4. Any ink that is left over in the syringe can be returned to the bottle. The syringe needs to be cleaned with water and dried properly before using it for another colour. It might be handy to use different syringes for different colours.

5. Once the refilled cartridge is placed back in the printer, run the cleaning cycle 1 to 3 times. If there is any gap in printing, the cycle could be run a few more times till the problem is rectified.

Before placing the refilled cartridge back into the printer, you could hold it upside down just to make sure ink is not dripping out of the sponge.

Here are a few things that must be kept in mind before re-filling a cartridge

1. The cartridge needs to be refilled before it is completely empty. If this is not done, the cartridge can dry out completely and get clogged.

2. It might be a good idea to place the refilled cartridge into the printer and leave it alone overnight so that the pressure in the cartridge can stabilize.

3. While making the holes at the top of the cartridge, to inject ink, please make sure you do not hit it too hard or it might crack open the cartridge and make it worthless. It might also make a hairline crack and allow some air in, which in turn would dry the ink out prematurely.

4. Some of the newer models of printers have a green chip in their cartridges. Looking at the cartridge closely one can spot this chip. They are usually known as “Intellidge” cartridges. The chip keeps track of the ink levels in the cartridge and notifies the computer when the ink levels are low. A resetting chip can be used to reset the memory on the chip. With the help of this chip, the printer recognizes the cartridge as being full and allows the refilled cartridge to print.

A refill kit is considerably cheaper than a new cartridge and obviously promises more than just one re-fill. It is therefore, easier on the pocket, keeps us from adding more useless plastic to the environment and increases the life of a cartridge.

A re-fill kit typically contains:

1. Bottles of Ink

2. A bottle of cleaning solution

3. A 2 part syringe

4. A users manual

Something to look out for before buying refilled cartridges

There are some cartridges sold with the “Single Use Only” tag. It is illegal to refill these cartridges with any other ink. This is usually found in Lexmark cartridges. If these cartridges are sent for refilling or refilled cartridges are bought, technically one could face legal charges for doing so. The cartridges that are not marked “Single Use Only” usually come at a higher price.

For such cartridges Lexmark offers a 20% reduction in price if the customer agrees to send the cartridges back to Lexmark.

This does not mean that using refilled cartridges is illegal in any way. All one needs to watch out for is whether the maker has prevented a third party refilling for their own cartridges. This can be understood easily by looking out for any labels such as “Single Use Only”. If there is no such obvious label, it is absolutely all right to go ahead with refilling the empty ink cartridges.

RAM and Latency - What you Need to Know

No one likes a slow computer. Well, at least not anyone I know. People spend thousands of dollars on upgrades and cutting edge systems to use a faster computer. However, upgrading your computer is not the only way to have a quicker computing experience. For those looking to squeeze the last bit of performance out of their machines, there are many ways to optimize your system for speed.

Overclocking your CPU, tweaking your registry, and fine tuning the bios are some the most common ways to optimize your system. Another often overlooked method is reducing your RAM’s latency.

RAM latency occurs when the CPU needs to retrieve information from memory. In order to receive information from RAM, the CPU sends out a request through the front side bus (FSB.) However, the CPU operates faster than the memory, so it must wait while the proper segment of memory is located and read, before the data can be sent back.

RAM latency is measured in wasted FSB clock cycles, since the data is transferred through the FSB. The bigger the latency number, the more FSB clock cycles it missed. The goal in reducing latency is to get the data back to the CPU in the least amount of FSB clock cycles possible.

The easiest way to reduce RAM latency is to increase the speed of the front side bus. This means that the FSB can send and receive data between the CPU and memory faster. However, this also overclocks the CPU, RAM, and possibly the AGP bus as well.

Overclocking your system will void your computer’s warranties and could possibly damage and/or destroy your system, so only attempt it if you’re willing to risk frying your computer. Adjusting your PC’s FSB is usually performed through the BIOS or through jumpers on your motherboard, although not all motherboards support overclocking.

A safer method is to adjust your RAM’s timings, although this can still potentially damage your system and usually only wields nominally performance gains. There’s no simple way to say it, so I’ll apologize in advance for spitting some tech jargon your way.

RAM timing are measured in CAS, RCD, RP, and RAS. CAS refers to the amount of clock cycles to reach the correct column of memory, RCD refers to the amount of cycles between RAS to CAS, RP refers to the amount of cycles needed to close a row and open the next row for reading, and RAS refers to the smallest number of clock cycles a row must be actively accessed. To simplify that explanation, remember that RAM timings are measured in FSB clock cycles, so the lower the number, the faster your system is.

For example, my RAM timings are 3-3-3-8 (CAS-RCD-RP-RAS.) To optimize my timings, I first tried lowering my CAS in my bios to 2.5 and rebooting. Windows booted just fine and everything worked correctly, so I then rebooted and went back into my bios and dropped my CAS down to 2, so now my timings were 2-3-3-8. Again, this setup seemed stable so I went in and tried reducing my RAS, since it was pretty high. This was the last stable tweak that I could do. When I tried to go below 2-3-3-7 in any timing my system either wouldn’t boot or Windows would generate a mass amount of memory related areas.

I used 3dMark 2005 to get an idea of how much improvement my memory adjustments made, if any. Before tweaking my timings I posted a 2105 3dMark score, after the tweaking I scored 2114. Not much of difference, but when it comes to optimizing your system for speed, every last bit helps.

While reducing RAM latency may not have a huge impact on system performance, it can give it a little extra kick, which combined with other methods of optimization, can result in a much quicker PC. So until you’re ready to buy a new computer, consider tuning up your current one to it’s fullest potential.

Cell Phones Evolve And So Do The Worries

When I was a youngster I was among a very few latchkey kids in our neighborhood, but today, according to the Census Bureau, at least seven million “latchkey children” return to an empty house on any given afternoon. Most of us with latchkey kids have created a list of rules for them to follow, covering topics such as snacks, strangers at the door, phone calls, etc. They are pretty much the same ones our parents outlined for us as kids. But today, we have a growing list of additional worries to address, such as television programs, video games, computer programs such as instant messaging, and use of the Internet.

A couple of years ago, my daughter was old enough to walk to her grandmother’s house after school. I wrestled with the idea, but finally conceded that she was responsible and mature enough to handle the three-block trek on her own. There were some days when an after school activity she forgot to tell us about delayed her and caused everyone to worry. And sometimes even her grandmother lost track of time and wasn’t there to greet her. We decided that she might be better off with a cell phone.

I searched the Internet and found out what lots of experts and other parents had to say on the topic. I contacted her school to learn what their rules were regarding cell phones and then created a list of our own rules. She is required to leave the cell phone off during school hours and has a cutoff time each school night for all phone calls. She is allowed to make long-distance calls to her friends on weekends and can talk as long as she wants providing her chores and homework are done.

She got a camera phone and has had some fun taking photos of her dogs and friends. All in all, she has done a good job of managing the responsibility. The only problems we have are that she is constantly losing her charger, forgetting to recharge and forgetting to turn on the phone when she should. Hum, sounds just like some adults I know! But I digress!

I remember the first cell phone I had — it was called a “bag phone” and it weighed about five pounds. It had to remain plugged into the lighter in my “mommy-mobile” but it was there in case I needed emergency assistance or to find out if my husband wanted something in particular for dinner when I stopped at Ukrop’s.

Gee, portable phones have come a long way! I just read that Palm has announced it will offer Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ software on its Treo™ smartphones. The phones, the first of which will be available from Verizon Wireless on its national broadband network, will permit calls, e-mail, Internet access, Office Mobile and more. I might actually like one of those if the buttons and screen are large enough for my feeble fingers and aging eyes.

On another front, the federal government is considering a national all-hazards system to alert you via text message on your cell phone in the event of a disaster or attack directly affecting your area. You could receive Amber Alerts and the like on web-enabled devices. A public-warning solution such as this will require legislation to at the federal, state and local levels to create standards for interoperability as well as integrated technology so it isn’t likely to be available in the very near term.

This would however be a significant improvement over the 50-year-old system, developed during the cold war, which relies on radio and television broadcasts to communicate emergency news. With all the newfangled technology we have now, not many of us are carrying a “portable” radio in our pockets. As the technologies continue to advance at a rapid pace, we are using our phones as business tools for e-mail, calendars and text messages and industry experts say it will not be long before we can use specially equipped phones instead of credit cards. Oh my, that could get us in trouble! And, frankly, as they do with most new technology, our kids are embracing new cell phone technology at a rapid pace.

Today there are so many things you can do with a cell phone, I can’t even keep track of them all. For example, I was recently on a business trip and the mobile phone for one member of the team was constantly sounding. Gosh, I thought, he is certainly a busy man, and then I found out that he was receiving stats on a sporting event!

And though I haven’t personally witnessed this, I understand that downloading images of Playmates on cell phones is the latest fad in 17 countries. Playboy has announced plans to develop adult-theme games and ring tones for cell phones in the U.S. Oh great; yet another distraction for every prepubescent boy and many of my male coworkers.

As with every technology come the associated risks — such as hackers targeting the data on our mobile devices and creating malicious software specifically designed to exploit all of those innovative features! The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) has developed hardware-based standards for mobile devices, to thwart criminals and to provide greater control by cell phone operators. Although hardware-based security is not new to the industry, manufacturers have yet to standardize, which keeps costs higher for everyone.

In addition, several manufacturers have created cell phones designed specifically for younger kids, which include many parental control features, simple buttons, flashy designs and limits on permissions for incoming and outgoing calls. However for teenagers (and possibly those in a corporate environment) there is another solution on the horizon. So despite the fact that with every emerging technology there is a corresponding threat, we can be thankful that there are an equal number of technologists working hard to combat those threats. If we could put our techno-teenagers to work developing technological solutions, we would have a real home run and could all be notified of it on our mobile devices! Ring-beep — you have web-mail!

All manufacturers of phones will give you options. But you should definitely also explore the web to get different options available to you. There are a lot of free ringtones out there. However, most likely you will have to pay some type of fee from your service provider to add a ringtone. I think that’s a tacky attitude given the amount of money you pay each month for these phones. I’m sure that sooner or later some outfit will waive those fees that as a sales and marketing tool. Until then, you are confined to what they have setup.

With the packages you can make a ringtone out of any sound you already have. Take an exisitng MP3 and convert it to a unique ringtone if you wish. They are fun to play around with and create interesting things.

Your Hard Drive is Going to Explode - Why a UPS is Essential

It’s most peoples worst computing nightmare. You wake up in the morning, flip on the computer, and it doesn’t boot. Sometimes the problem rears its ugly head as a horrific clacking noise. Other times it simply gives a read error.

At this point, most people panic. The first thing you wonder is whether or not the data is recoverable. There is no universal answer to this. In some cases, a simple scan with some data recovery software is all that it takes to retrieve the contents of the drive. In other cases, if you want it badly enough, it will take thousands of dollars and a shipment of the drive to a clean lab where they will pull the platters inside of the drive and access them that way.

Now you’re probably wondering if there’s a way to prevent this from happening. Well, you’re in luck. Getting a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is the very best and most effective way to prevent your data from pulling a disappearing act.

While it is not fool-proof, having something that regulates the electricity flowing into your computer can reduce the risk of a drive failure by up to 70%. This figure goes up to around 90% if the computer is being used while in an electrical storm. (My computer repair business always gets a little boost after a thunderstorm, courtesy of the lightning wreaking havoc on people’s hard drives.)

Don’t just run out and get any UPS. You want to get an intelligent one. The ‘intelligent’ UPS will regulate the power without having to hit the battery every time the voltage takes a dip which greatly improves battery longevity. They also include options to hook the power supply up to your computer via a serial or USB port so you can monitor what the power is doing. This also gives the option to allow for a soft shut-down if the power goes out and you are away from your desk.

You can get an Uninterruptible Power Supply at most computer stores. Best Buy carries a fairly wide selection of them.

As for brands, I’ve personally used APC with much success. Opti-UPS is another excellent brand. In fact, I have an Opti that is 6 years old and still works fine, although the batteries now have no life to them. (That’s to be expected. Rechargeable batteries only last so long)

Now that you know of the importance of a UPS I would strongly encourage you to invest in one. It is far better to spend $100 now on some preventative maintenance than having to spend much more later on data recovery.

Sony, Nike, Gucci, BT, Microsoft, Ford, Armani… and so on, names we come across in daily life, these are top “manufacturer brands”, then there are Tesco, Next, M&S, GAP, Burberry, Virgin etc, these are top “retail brands”. Most of us are very familiar with these brands as we have seen them around for a long time and have grown to trust them, we know who they are and what to expect from their products.

It is also common practice for people to become brand loyal too, i.e. you try and like the products of a brand and then stick to that brand, or buy a product like a Fuji digital camera and use a Fuji memory card to go with it. In fact, the brands actively encourage brand loyalty e.g. if you buy an Epson printer, the company’s literature will encourage the use of Epson ink cartridges.

Many people are then surprised, to learn that their famous brand camera, watch, car, clothing, computer etc, is not actually made by the company whose name appears on the product, but by another company they perhaps have never heard of. This company is known as the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) being the actual manufacturer of the product which is sold under it’s own brand, or the brand of another company, often using that company’s design, specifications etc.

Some OEM relationships are public knowledge e.g. Tesco do not produce instant coffee, so, an instant coffee producer makes Tesco instant coffee. Other OEM relationships are less obvious e.g. BT fax machines are mostly made by Olivetti, early Hewlett Packard digital cameras were made by Pentax and 70% of the notebook computers sold in the world (Dell, Compaq, HP, Apple, IBM, Sony etc.) are made by Quanta Computers in Taiwan and MG City Rover is made by Tata, the largest car manufacturer in India.
Many OEM relationships are well-kept secrets or at least kept discrete and known only to industry insiders e.g. Dell and Lexmark, from 2002 Lexmark produce Dell inkjet printers, laser printers and related print cartridges. Sony and Sandisk jointly develop and produce Memory Stick cards, which are sold under both brands etc.

So, is this a good or bad thing? Well, it’s a good thing for the consumer because these joint collaborations drastically reduce new product development and production costs, ultimately this saving translates into lower prices of products for all of us. However, it is worth bearing in mind, that a more expensive brand may not necessarily be a better product, or even any different to a lower priced product.
