Nepalese man, 75, oldest person to conquer Mt Everest

They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

This year mountaineer Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for the Mount Everest after reaching the top of Mont Blanc in France earlier this season.

The 75-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma or Mount Everest. Bahadur Sherchan last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

He was reported in good health as he began making his descent. Now that Min Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism. His first found him within 172 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. later, Andrew Brash, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Chomolungma to finish what he had started.

Sherchan just 9 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mt Everest. “Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Therefore, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Min Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. Further, he was all too aware of the potential dangers the mountain could bring. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the mountain and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu.

The Ironman Swim - Time for a Wave Start?

One of the most time-honored traditions of the Ironman is the mass swim start.

It truly is a sight to behold if as spectator you are witnessing your first ironman start. You may wonder how everyone manages to survive out there with the incredible free for all that usually follows within seconds of the start gun.

Some feel its an accident waiting to happen and filled with danger for the beginner ironman. It should be mentioned that normally over 50% of any Ironman race consists of first time starters. Some have never experienced a mass swim start of this magnitude.

The key to a successful swim is to go in with a race plan that will keep you out of trouble and away from the majority of the thrashing arms and legs. Yet time after time, athletes fail to seed themselves properly and just head out with the pack, unaware of what lies ahead.

Its not unusual for some people to just stay on shore, to terrified by what they are witnessing to even get in the water. I’ve been in races where it turns out that volunteers have managed to coax swimmers into the water and eventually everything turns out for them. Its just a matter of conquering the initial fear. Normally, once a swimmer can find some room out there and find a rhythm, they begin to relax and things go smoother.

There are those that feel its time for a wave start just out of safety concerns. It could be done fairly easily considering everyone wears a timing chip anyway.

Start the pros and everyone under 60 minutes first. A minute later start a second wave of everyone between 60 and 90 minutes and then a final wave of everyone else. The theory is that this will eliminate much of the mayhem of the mass start. And most likely it would. It would also make for less congestion out on the bike course as cyclists fight for room on the road during those early kilometers.

Some of the worst accidents I’ve ever witnessed in an Ironman bike leg have been within the first 40 kilometers. Usually this is caused by over-crowding as too many cyclists jockey for position.

Personally, I don’t feel you will ever see a wave start in the Ironman. The mass start is an Ironman tradition that will never be changed easily. It would probably take a disaster of major proportions to have race officials even consider it.

That being said, I feel its up to each individual athlete to go into the Ironman swim prepared.

Go in with a workable plan that will make the swim a safe, stress-free, enjoyable experience.

After many years of messing up the swim start, I finally came up with a plan that really worked for me. Not only did I enjoy it more and avoid the mob, my times became faster.

Controlled Body Movement The Key Essential For Your Golf Game

Basic body movement is essential in any sport. Of course it is also essential for any type of physical activity we do.

As parents, we teach little children how to do the simplest of things. This includes how to move and how to control movements for precision and safety.

Basic body movement also means limiting movement to the essential movement for what you want to do. We control the desired movement. And, we prevent unwanted movement. We learn to keep our movements just firm enough to be coordinated. We also learn to allow just enough relaxation so the movements can flow through their proper range with the most comfort.

For many golfers, if you think about your hands doing something or even have much of your focus on your hands then, usually, you will do something incorrect with your hands.

Basic body movement, under control, is to be your main focus. When you become good at this part of your golf swing then can you try advanced hand movements. But, any of these hand movements should only be done in harmony with the dominant body and upper arm movements.

Even your arm movements need more focus in the early learning stages than any perceived hand movements. And, these arm movements should focus on movements generated in the upper arms which are as close to your body as possible.

A Special Lesson With A Good Golfer

A few years ago I did 2 golf lessons with a man who stood a little over 6 feet tall. He was having trouble spraying his hits with his mid-irons to his woods. I asked him to hit a ball with a wedge. He chose his 64 degree lob wedge and promptly hit a high, 95 yard hit.

What was he doing wanting a lesson from anyone? Answer: He had one wrong move that he wasn’t aware he was doing.

I used my interpretation of Fred Couples’ looping swing to guide him to the correct arm movement. When he tried my idea of Fred’s swing Andy hit the ball higher and 15 yards farther.

He did not want to develop that move but he understood how to correct his error with the proper movement. He hit a lot of good golf balls afterwards and knew why he did so.

Andy’s other problem involved chipping. He had a good hand movement in his chipping effort. He had no idea how to use that good movement with the movements of his body. As well, he had no idea of the importance of his body activity during his chipping.

A few minutes into the 2nd lesson he had learned how to time his hand movements with his body movements. He also learned where his hands should be in relation to his spine as he did the hand movements that he wanted.

His chipping improved dramatically within the lesson. His confidence was as high as possible that he could land a golf ball where he wanted. And, all it took was understanding how his arms and hands were to move in harmony with his body and also in relationship to his body position.

How I Developed My Understanding Of Basic Body Movement

I taught physical education from Grades 1 to 9. In one short span of time I could see the development of movement in all stages of growth. I could also see the physical and mental effort carried out by these children as they learned the skills and the games which I taught.

I used to teach the various Grades a level of a game which they could handle. I taught positional play in slow motion and then introduced body movements which enabled the students to move fluently up and down the playing surface. They quickly learned this and asked for more. That is when I taught the various skills. The game was taught first; and then came the skills.

In golf, there are a number of games played during a round.

  • We try to get a better score than someone else.

  • We try to get a personal best score during a round.

  • We try to play against the golf course to get a par round or better.

  • We try to get a better score than par on each hole.

BUT, usually forgotten is the game of playing each golf shot as good as we possibly can. It is this last “game” which I teach in my golf lessons.

The free articles combined with the instruction modules will teach you how to win “the game” of playing each hit during your round of golf.

Relating this to teaching golf swing skills I emphasize basic posture, alignment, control, and body movement. Arm and hand activity do not get taught until my students learn basic movements. Because of this, beginners and students who had never hit the ball in the air soon hit draws with even their short irons when they hit the ball over a fence.

You, The Ground, And The Golf Ball

We stand on the ground. The golf ball rests on the ground (er, usually). Before we try to dislodge that golf ball from its place on the ground we should learn a good method of relating what we do from our “perch” on the ground.

Between our connection to the ground and the ball’s position on the ground we have a lot of body mass and joints along with that “stick” thing. We need movement to make the golf ball move. Therefore, we swing back and forth to make the golf club move the ball. But, those joints want to do all sorts of contortions during our golf swing efforts.

We need to develop an understanding of how to move at the fewest possible joints and how to control or prevent movements of the rest of our joints. This is basic to anything we do. It is very important to this “confusing” skill called the golf swing.

I term this the reflection phase. It is a time to prepare for physical and mental relaxation. This important phase is usually over-looked by most teams as they are trying to either celebrate the win or discuss the loss and any related issues. If this aspect is incorporated every practice then it will be a natural process after the games as well. Yes the practices need to incorporate warm up as well as cool down.
Apart from the physiology of increasing strength through stretching regimes. This helps the team members understand their bodies and it’s needs.

It is also a great time for the coaches to get feed back on the events. This gets the team to contribute to their immediate experiences, whether is be a competition or practice. It helps everybody paint a mental picture of their collective accomplishments.

When a group of individuals gets together and focuses on something other than the immediate task at hand then the task becomes another routine within the training regime.
This is switching the focus from the actual cooling down process and focuses on the socialization aspect of cooling down. It deals with the fresh experiences that have just occured. Let the team discuss the events first before the coach talks or the meeting is held in the locker room. Young minds need to also voice opinions to each other before they talk to the larger group. This helps build unity within and a power of responsibility throughout.

It is a time to also talk about the other aspects of sports activities. These are nutritional and additional aspects of concentrating on mental focus.

Breaking down #9 Ohio State at #17 Michigan

Breaking down Ohio State vs. Michigan

Known simply in Columbus, Ann Arbor, and every place in-between as “The Game”, Ohio State and Michigan meet in the regular season finale for both teams again. And, as is usually the case, the stakes are very high.

The Buckeyes can claim no worse than a share of the Big 10 crown, and will be assured of a spot in one of the big BCS game with a win. The Wolverines, who were thought to have been reduced to a pure spoiler role, have risen back up into the conference race. The turning point of the Wolverines season has to be when Chad Henne threw a touchdown pass on the last play of the game against Penn State to knock them from the ranks of the undefeated a month ago.

If that pass falls incomplete, Michigan falls to 3-4 and this weeks game, though still their biggest of the year, would be more about pride for the Wolverines than aspirations.

They not only need to emerge victorious on Saturday, but would also need in-state rival Michigan State to pull an improbable upset versus Penn State later on in the afternoon to snare a share of conference honors.

Both squads enter this game playing their best football of the season, Ohio State’s offense has put up 40 points in the past four games, after quarterback Troy Smith struggled early on directing the offense, only to look nearly flawless after his grip on the starting job was slipping away. Due to this, everyone around him has gotten better.

Michigan on the other hand, has moved the ball better behind sophomore signal-caller Henne, and this maligned defense is even stopping the opposition with regularity. Wins over Iowa, Northwestern and Indiana are nice (only the IU win wasn’t competitive) , but remember, Ohio State DESTROYED those three squads by a combined score of 120-23.

THE GAMEPLANS

Both teams will want to establish the running game, and they have the backs to do it, Ohio State’s Antonio Pittman and Michigan’s combination of Jason Hart and Kevin Grady. I give the Buckeyes the edge, as Smith is also a threat on the ground, while Henne is your classic drop-back passer. If the Wolverines and forced into second and third- and long, Henne and a sometimes shaky offensive line will have added pressure on them (literally) and these Ohio State linebackers led by A.J. Hawk could feast on him all day.

Last year with basically the same lineups, Smith ran wild for 145 yards and a score and threw for two more in the Buckeyes 37-21 win in Columbus. Michigan’s linebackers and safeties may have to blitz him at times to force quick decisions, which leaves one-on-one coverage against a trio of talented receivers.

The Wolverines secondary has been their defensive strength all year, and they will be tested here. With Smith becoming a better passer, coach Jim Tressel has given him more opportunities to go down field to Santonio Holmes and Ted Ginn.

I give Ohio State a small advantage overall on offense, as I feel Henne has improved from his early season woes. He can do some damage with his receivers, Jason Avant and Steve Breaston, but he will need more time to throw than I think he’ll get on Saturday.

But, the bigger advantage to the Buckeyes rest on defense, where they physically beat teams up and wear them down n the second half.

On special teams, both teams boast dangerous return men. Ginn and Breaston can both change the game in a matter of seconds. Both coverage teams will be under the gun, and the punters would be best advised to kick away from these guys, even out of bounds if they can without shan king it.

The home crowd gives the Wolverines probably their lone advantage, but I still do not think that’s not enough. Notre Dame and Minnesota both came out with out Michigan Stadium victorious and the Buckeyes are better overall than either of those teams. History tells us that Michigan has controlled this series at The Big House, but Ohio State wins this one with a brutal display on D.

Improve Your Swing Plane and Improve Your Golf Swing

We as golfers have heard the term swing plane many times during our golfing careers. But do we really know the definition of it and the bearing upon our golf swing?

Recently, I had a conversation with Dean Reinmuth (top 30 teaching pro ranked by Golf Digest) and I think he described swing plane the best. Dean suggests to think of the swing plane as an imaginary circle. The imaginary circle that represents the swing plane is set at an angle. It is the path on which it is necessary for the club to travel in order to execute the swing correctly.

Beginning at address, the clubhead and shaft should be positioned at the “bottom” of the swing plane. During takeaway into the backswing and at the transition point of the swing, the clubhead and shaft are to remain on the swing plane. These three phases of the swing represent the club traveling “up” the swing plane to “top” of it. Keep in mind the visual of the circle and the shaft of the club dissecting the shoulder during these phases of the swing.

Once the transition is complete, the downswing begins and the clubhead is moving down the swing plane. The path on which the club is traveling down should be the same as on the backswing.

Continuing on with the swing plane, the club is to travel to again the “bottom” of the swing plane for impact with the golf ball. Once impact has occurred with the golf ball the follow-through of the swing occurs, and it is still necessary for the club to travel upon the correct swing plane. This assures that you are releasing the golf club correctly.

The swing plane on the follow through is essentially a “mirror image” of it on the backswing. The golf club, again, must travel up an imaginary circle that dissects your front shoulder up into the finish position.

What does the swing plane represent?

The swing plane represents the path on which your golf club should travel upon during the swing.

Why is it so important for the golf club to travel upon the swing plane?

The golf club must travel upon the correct swing path in order to impact the golf ball correctly. Impacting the golf ball correctly provides the greatest possibility of delivering powerful, accurate, and consistent shots on the course of play.

Oftentimes the golf club does not travel upon the correct swing plane. What happens in such instances?

The path of the club becomes and “outside to in” move resulting in a slice, or an “inside to out” swing plane resulting in a hook. Overall, the club’s not traveling on the correct swing plane results in poor shots.

Now that we know what a proper swing plane is within the golf swing and we can visually create a picture of it, how do we develop the proper swing plane?

This is the hard part, and there are no secrets about it. Referring back to my conversation with Dean Reinmuth, he suggests that it is a process of creating “feel” for the proper swing plane. Creating “feel” is a process of knowing where the clubhead is on the swing plane. This allows you to know where your golf club is in regards to the proper swing plane required of the golf swing.

How do you go about creating “feel” within your golf swing?

It is a process of understanding the mechanics of swing and developing the proper swing mechanics within your golf swing.

This allows you to know what the golf club should be doing, where it should be during each phase of the swing, and when it is not where it should be when you are swinging the golf club.

Overall, it becomes a process of recognition. Recognition of what is the right and the wrong movements/positions within the golf swing. Once “feel” is developed within your swing, I would definitely say you are close to mastering the golf swing.

This does require time and effort on your part. But if you are willing to put in the time and effort, rewards on the course will be well documented.
