Solar Power Can Knock Money off Your Electricity Bill

As the price of carbon based fuels continue to increase, many concerned people are burying their heads in the sand. Some homeowners however are considering the installation of the solar cells that will allow them to harness the power of the sun to provide energy for their needs.

When electricity prices were low, it was unnecessary to justify the upfront expense of money required to install solar panels, solar water heaters and similar equipment. The reason was simple to understand - it would simply take too long to recoup the cost of the equipment in the form of lower energy bills.

Things have changed though. As energy prices continue to go up, the amount of time required to recoup the upfront cost goes down. In addition, a number of state and local tax incentives make it even easier for homeowners to go solar and save money right away.

Solar power has already proven itself and its ability to lower energy costs substantially, and more and more homeowners are taking a serious look at converting their residences to solar power. The costs of installing solar panels is still high, with a typical two kilowatt installation of OVR Solar solar panels costing at least £10,000 / ($20, 000) in most cases, but special tax incentives and long term energy savings can help homeowners recoup those upfront costs faster than ever before.

Subsidies are also now available. This tax savings can help eligible homeowners recoup some of the costs of installing solar panels and solar water heating systems up front, in addition to the energy savings they will enjoy down the road.

Some states will offer homeowners who install qualifying solar panel or water heating systems to write off a portion of the cost against tax liability, while others will provide a standard tax credit based on kilowatt usage. Still others provide tax relief in the form of property tax reductions or elimination, and many states provide businesses, government agencies and commercial enterprises with special tax breaks as well.

The factors affecting how long it will take to break even will vary from case to case.. However, as the prices for heating oil, gas and other forms of traditional energy continue to soar, so will demand for alternatives

Take the first step to energy self sufficiency with OVR Solar.

One Way to Get Rid of Nesting Pigeons

As I dusted the ceiling of #202 with my long feather duster in preparation for painting, I kept hearing a soft whirring sound like a small electric drill a jeweler or dentist would use. It came on for a couple of seconds and then went off. It seemed to be coming from below.

Well, I thought, that made sense. The tenant below was some kind of inventor so he was probably working on a project.

But it wasn’t really coming from below. I followed the soft on again off again whirring sound out onto the apartment’s balcony. The whirring got louder then stopped. I heard rustling from above. As I approached the sound two gray pigeons suddenly burst out from under a space between the aluminum porch overhang and the main wood roof. They flew over to the peak of an adjoining building and watched me.

Wow, I thought, nesting pigeons, we’ve never had those before.

Later, a tenant told me, “You’ve got to kill them. They’ll keep coming back year after year. They’ll never go away.”

Another tenant said, “They’re like flying rats, and they carry mites. You gotta get rid of them.”

A prospective tenant visited the apartment. When she stepped out onto the porch the pigeons panicked and flew away scaring her.

“Those are dirty things,” she yelped, and never came back.

The pigeons had to go. They were building a nest, but hadn’t laid any eggs yet. As I pondered the problem one of them stood on the peak of the adjoining building’s roof, a long twig in his beak, impatiently waiting for me to get lost.

I have nothing against pigeons. I thought it was kind of cool they were building a nest up there, preparing to raise a family. I thought maybe I could find a tenant to move in that liked pigeons.

“Maybe some wild bird, a natural predator, will kill them,” said another tenant.

“The cats are trying to get them,” said another.

“The owner won’t like them,” said yet another.

“Get one of those fake owls at the hardware store,” said another.

I thought about all of these ideas as I began to tape off the living room.

I didn’t want to drive to the hardware store. I practically lived there already, and I wasn’t in the mood to spend another dime. Maybe I could screen off their entrance. I tried reaching up there, but it was too high, and if I stepped out on the railing the fall would kill me, and I didn’t have a ladder that would go up that high.

Then it hit me.

A natural predator, a fake owl.

I looked at my feather duster.

It was a big oversized one with a telescopic handle and big brown feathers. It looked like a headless turkey vulture.

I put two pieces of blue masking tape on it for eyes and then taped it to the railing.

The wind blew its feathers about like a big ugly bird monster. It appeared lifelike.

The two pigeons on the adjoining peak watched me mount it. They began talking about it. They paced nervously back and forth. I could sense their fear. They realized instinctively and almost instantly that this was no match for them, and that this was no place to build their nest, raise their family and revisit year after year.

They departed and I haven’t seen them since.

5 Easy Steps to Protect Your Hardwood Floor From Disaster

Common knowledge states that hardwood floors are a great investment for a homeowner. They add a certain charm and character to a home that can’t be replicated by laminates, carpeting, or any other type of flooring. However, the investment does not stop with the decision to purchase hardwoods. To retain the value, the hardwood must be properly cared for and maintained. Fortunately, with a few simple, easy, inexpensive steps, your hardwood flooring will always remain in perfect shape.

1. Do not use Murphy’s Oil Soap. Murphy’s works great on wooden furniture, but don’t make the mistake of using it on your hardwood floors. You won’t notice anything wrong after applying it once, but if used consistently, residue will build up and leave your floor with a dull appearance.

2. Do not use a Wet Swiffer. A Dry Swiffer is great for collecting dust, dirt, and pet hair from your floors, and it is also less abrasive than a vacuum cleaner. However, a Wet Swiffer can cause major long-term damage. The chemicals in the cleaning solution can break down the urethane finish on your floor and leave it dull, faded, and lifeless.

3. Place area rugs anywhere that might collect water. Prime areas are in front of the refrigerator, by the dishwasher, and near any sinks. Make sure that the floor is protected in any spot that is susceptible to minor leaks and water collection. A pool of water is the quickest way to destroy your floor.

4. Use floor mats in spots where people step on the hardwood directly after being outside. In addition to protecting against wet or muddy footprints, floor mats will help collect any sharp or abrasive materials stuck in the treads of shoes. This step will help prevent accidental scraping or scratching.

5. Use felt pads when moving furniture. Or better yet, lift the furniture off the ground instead of sliding it across your hardwood floor. If felt pads must be used, please make sure that they are free of any debris. Even if a tiny little object like a staple is under that pad when heavy furniture is set upon it, your floor could receive some serious gouges.

These steps will help ensure that your home retains its value by protecting your hardwood floors against major damage.

Accidents do happen, however, no matter how careful you are. If your floor becomes damaged, contact the manufacturer or the installer for advice.

Power Tools and HAV - Hand Arm Vibration - Prevention is Better Than Cure

Power tools are some of the most useful devices ever invented, but by their nature of concentrating and directing force you need to be prepared for the extra juice.

What is Hand Arm Vibration?

Hand Arm Vibration is the effect of long term or extreme vibration exposure from power tool use. It can result in the following medical conditions.

  • vibration white finger
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • permanent and painful tingling and numbness in the hands and arms
  • damage to bones in the hands and arms
  • painful joints and muscle weakening

Not too nice is it? It is estimated that hundreds of thousands have advanced vibration white finger.

Minimizing HAV

More modern tools are designed to reduce vibration. Some tools isolate the human contact zone from the vibrating parts - which is excellent. So in purchasing power tools for yourself or your employees consider this very strongly, not just to be a nice fellow but as far has health and safety go it is a sound investment.

International codes have been implemented that require revealing the vibration level of a tool. The units of vibration are in meters/second/second. Try to avoid using tools above 2.5

Regular maintenance and tuning of tools will keep them operation at recommended level, and always give appropriate training in using the tool and using the right power tool for the job.

Power tools are great and used safely they are even better.

Being Creative And Develop Your Own Design

Some people have been born with a gift of knowing creative design principles. Others, maybe you included, have to struggle to develop even the tiniest creative skills they do have. One thing is for certain, you can learn to be more creative. And you can discover the creative design ideas that other artists use for inspiration, even if you were not born with a single creative bone in your body.

It is better for you to make a decision whether when you want to begin to learn the creative design process as there are several principles of design. These principles give an over riding basis on how your design elements will interact with one another, in your artwork and your designs. Each one influences the others in an endless tug-of-war within your mind and on your creative canvas. Your challenge is to learn to create harmony out of all these principles in your artwork, and to give your designs that unique blend that can only come from within you.
You may wonder what the creative design principles are?

The creative design principles are as the followings:

1. Balance
Balance is the arrangement of different design elements, on any given piece of artwork, so that there is an equal distribution of visual weight to the whole piece. Art that doesn’t have balance can leave the viewer uneasy, almost as if there is something wrong with the piece.

2. Rhythm
Rhythm has to do with repeating elements and patterns in your designs. It also involves variations on those patterns to provide freshness, and to keep your art from becoming boring. Repetition can help to unify a piece, or bring different parts of your artwork together. It can also provide the basic textures for your design work.

3. Dominance
Dominance refers to emphasizing certain parts of your design so that they get noticed first. Every piece of artwork needs a focal point which determines where your eyesight goes first, when you look at it. If you do not have a focal point your viewer quickly loses interest. Having too many points of interest will also leave the viewer with no place to focus. There are many ways to emphasize parts of your design, but the most important point is to select your focus based on your main message and, secondly, in consideration of whom your audience will be.

4. Unity
Unity is the final aspect in design, which gives a feeling that all the elements belong together. Unifying a piece can involve using various elements, including matching colors, shapes, textures, groupings, weights, typographies, or sizes. Unity, in your art, is the overall feeling that brings your piece together, and gives it wholeness or variety, whichever you are trying to convey to the viewer.

You have to focus on these four design principles as the basic of creating your artwork. Lacking one of these, your work will not be perfect. No matter where your creativity takes you, if you will try to incorporate balance, rhythm, dominance, and unity into your artwork, you will be building on the solid basics of creative design.

Easy Installation Of Mini Blinds

Mini blinds are an effective way to control glare and sun invasion, are easy to operate and provide optimum privacy while maintaining a pleasant appearance. To the delight of many homeowners, mini blinds can be used in conjunction with various other window coverings.

The main drawback to mini blinds is that they are not airtight and they do not provide adequate insulation. Their main feature, however, is to help prevent direct sunlight and they accomplish this feat very well. When selecting mini blinds, it is important to realize that not all are created equally. In fact, they are designed using three basic materials, including vinyl, aluminum and wood. Of all three, vinyl is the least expensive while aluminum offers the largest selection of color and can be custom sized. Wood mini blinds are the most expensive of the materials and, much like aluminum, they can be custom sizes and are available in a variety of different tones.

When measuring for mini blinds, an individual must first determine their position. For instance, inside mounting provides a more custom appearance while outside mounting promotes improved sunlight control. For inside mounting, the width between the areas that will feature brackets must be measured. After noting the narrowest measurement of the top, middle and bottom, the length from the top inside casing to the sill must be measured. If mounting is to be on the outside, the overall width of the coverage area must be measured.

After the area has been measured and the mini blinds purchased, installation should be a piece of cake. Installation will begin by removing the window stop from the top part of the window. Next, the brackets that accompanied the mini blinds will need to be screwed to the side window casing at the top. During this step, two to three screws should be used per bracket. The mini blinds are then ready to be slid into the brackets. Once in place, the mini blinds can be secured by placing the end caps over the brackets.

For many individuals, the installation of mini blinds is an easy task. However, for those who do not wish to undertake this task or who simply do not have the time, a professional home repair specialist may be the best way to ensure proper installation. Due to the simplicity of the project and the fact that the mini blinds are already purchased, the cost of installation should be minimal.

Tips on Ladder Safety

PLACEMENT

•Ladders should be placed so each side rail is on level and firm footing so the ladder is rigid, stable and secure.

•Boxes, loose bricks, or other loose packing should not support the side rails.

•No ladder should be placed in front of a door opening towards the ladder.

•The correct angle for a freestanding ladder is 4 to 1. For every 4 lengths up the ladder should stand 1 length away from the house.

•Ladders should rise to a height of at least 3 feet above any landing place for people using the ladder.

•Ladders should be securely fixed at the top and base so they can’t from move either points of rest. If this is not possible, then a person should stand at the base of the ladder and secure it manually.

USE

•Carry tools and supplies in belts or pouches around the waist, never in your hands.

•Don’t use the top step of the ladder for standing or stepping.

•If you have a fear of heights - STOP - don’t climb a ladder let someone else do it.

•Read and follow the manufacturer’s warning stickers attached to the ladder. It is amazing how few people read this information.

•Only one person at a time may work from a single ladder.

•Always face the ladder when ascending or descending.

•Don’t use a ladder if it is missing, or has a weakened, broken or otherwise defective rung or tread.

•No metal ladder or ladder reinforced with wire should be used in the vicinity of any electrical conductor or any electrical equipment.

•Always maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder (2 feet/1 hand or 2 hands/1 foot should be in contact with ladder at all times).

•A ladder should not be used for any use other than its correct use as a ladder. For Example: Scaffolding.

CARRYING

•Carry the ladder balanced horizontally, never up and down.

•Watch your step while carrying the ladder to avoid tripping hazards.

Moving Across The US? Consider An Auto Shipping Company To Move Your Family Vehicles.

Car transporters, those long double-decker trucks with nine or ten cars tilted at odd angles that deliver new vehicles to dealers.

If you are moving thousands of miles, across the country perhaps, you can pay a car transporting company to move your three or four family vehicles. They move them in a similar way to the way a courier company moves parcels, changing car transporters, as it moves across the country.

This option is especially useful if your family has two or more vehicles to transport. Try to imagine the alternatives. The other ways of moving your vehicles include a convoy of cars, vans, recreational vehicles and bikes, or one person travelling backwards and forwards for two weeks and staying in hotels, using gas and putting a lot of miles on each vehicle.

The companies in this market may use smaller trucks than the dealer delivery ones, but the principle is the same.

On the large nine car transporters the loads are now planned by special computer software to get more cars onto each load. The software knows the dimensions of each model and can calculate what angle each can be raised to, creating just enough space for another car. That is why you see cars tilted down over the front of the cab, or up at angles on the lower deck. Older car transporters, without all these facilities are still around, but are used mainly on short delivery routes, perhaps to transfer cars between dealers or to an auction.

The more cars on each load the more competitive the company can be in quoting for delivery to distant cities and they may combine your vehicles with those of other people moving to the same area. You will get a better deal if you are prepared to do let them take longer, allowing more time to get a full load together.

Sebastian Romero has a security industry background, and drives 30,000 miles a year. Find more articles here. Check out car transporter and auto shipping.
