A Texas Holdem Poker Strategy Guide: How to Handle Starting Hands

When playing Texas Holdem Poker on an internet Poker room for the first time, many new players start playing using the strategy they would use as if they were playing in their friend’s basement a normal poker game: this is the best strategy to lose all your money fast, though.

Texas Holdem has got very different gaming strategies that are up to several factors and one of them is how to correctly manage your starting hand.

In fact, actually it is more probable that the hand ends before that the flop is shown instead that the hand finishes with the showdown.

Moreover, your behaviour when dealing your starting hand should evaluate the other players’ strategy, how many players are in the table, and what is your position in the table itself.

When starting playing poker you should play tight to learn how to play “in the field”.

Let’s analyze some pretty common hands to see and understand what to play and what to fold.

AA or KK starting hands are very strong hands, which give you some serious advantage from other players. Having those hands will let you raise when it’s your turn, and to re-raise whether the pot was previously raised. Knowing how other players are behaving, you might want to limp in with your hand, meaning that you should call to see the flop.

If you have an AK, suited or not (also known as the Big Slick) you should do as you were doing for an AA or KK: raise the pot when your turn comes. It is not recommended to limp around though.

A great mistake of new players is to over evaluate a starting hand such as A - (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 suited or not). Even if it’s featuring an A, this hand is not giving you anything particular. You should fold in that case and wait for the next hand. Obviously you must evaluate the number of players in the table. In a full table an A- starting hand means like having nothing: then you should absolutely fold.

This situation would be slightly different if you were playing directly against one opponent only, especially with an A-9o (off suit). You would also go into the pot if you were the dealer and only the blinds were in the pot.

This strategy will be known to advanced poker player but its an important one for any beginner in the game. Get you head in the game and learn before you play.

Oklahoma Bingo

Oklahoma has long been synonymous with Bingo. That’s because the Indian tribes of Oklahoma have run Bingo games for generations. Patrons from all of the surrounding states load up in cars and travel into Oklahoma to play Bingo on the weekends. Growing up in a small town just south of the Red River, I knew of a group that would rent a bus to travel to Chocktaw Bingo every Friday night.

The 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatorty Act followed a landmark ruling by The U.S. Supreme Court the year before. Since that time, 23 of the 39 Indian tribes of Oklahoma have opened gaming halls. The Chickasaw were the first Oklahoma Indian tribe to take advantage of the gaming laws, and today run ten casinos of their own. Bingo was the game on which these casinos were founded. Electronic games like slots were not allowed, because they are thought to contribute to gambling addiction more than bingo.

Tulsa, Oklahoma is synonymous with the term Bingo parlour. The charity Bingo sites around that area means you can find a game of bingo any hour of the day. The Oklahoma Charity Games Act, passed in the early nineties, assured that bingo would be a huge moneymaker for the state. The act also covered pulltab or breakopen tickets, but that isn’t our concern here.

In 1993, charity game licensing was (strangely enough) transferred from the Oklahoma Tax Commission to the Alcohol Beverage Control Board, which regulates Bingo games in Oklahoma to this day. There are over 860 non-profit bingo operators in the state now. Most of these are church and veterans organization charities.

In recent years, Oklahoma law has changed to allow for big Indian gaming casinos. You’ll now find Indian casinos with slots, video poker and blackjack tables. Craps and roulette are not legal in the Indian casinos yet, but that is only a matter of time. No one can say what having other games in the bingo houses will do for the popularity of bingo. My guess is bingo will retain its huge popularity, because Bingo has maintained a gambling niche for over eight decades. It’s more than just for grandmas anymore.

Anson Chambers enjoys most kinds of casino games. If you want to read more about the state of American Bingo, take a look at Oklahoma Bingo.

My Father’s Lucky Betting System

I was raised by my father. My father was a gambler. When I was
14 my father had an incredible lucky summer betting on baseball.
He had worked out a system that won 90% of the time. I didn’t
realize it at the time. When my father went on a hot streak he
would become very quiet. I think he feared if he talked about it
the spell would be broken and he would lose. Yes, he was like
every other gambler, he was very superstitious.

Like I said, I didn’t realize how well my father’s system had
been working that summer until he started renting a different
Ferrari every other week. And then we started dining at much
more expensive restaurants. And then he started buying me top
notch designer outfits. I never asked my father about all the
money. I respected his superstitions. I knew he would tell me
when the time was right.

It was in mid September when my father dropped by my high school
to pick me up and take me home. He wasn’t driving a Ferrari. And
he was much more talkative on the ride home. It was at this
point I knew his streak was over. And I knew he would tell me
all about it.

It was while we were eating dinner that he explained the
baseball betting system to me. And I’ll never forget the glint
in his eye as he told me the system he had created. He was very
proud that he had thought it up. His system was very basic and
was not based on odds or who was pitching. His system was based
on human nature.

This is what he told me.

“Pam, the way I figured it was that the best time to place a bet
on a baseball team was after they came home from a road trip.
And you never bet the first game they are at home but always the
second game. The way I see it is that these ball players have
been on the road for a week or two, they’ve been eating
restaurant food, they’ve been staying up late drinking and
screwing around, it takes its toll. Now they get home to their
family life, some home cooking, time with their kids, and they
are more relaxed and they get a good night sleep. The second
game at home, it doesn’t matter how good the team is that they
are playing or who is pitching against them these boys are going
to win.”

My father made a lot of money that magical summer with this
system. But then it ended. And that system never worked again
for him. Copyright 2005 Pamela Pompeii. All rights reserved.

Win by Losing - Laying bets on a Horse Racing System

Betting exchanges are a recent introduction into the betting world that
have taken the UK gambling community by storm. In the past, bets had
to be placed with bookies, where the punter would back a team or entity
and the bookie would lay the bet. In this system, the bookie would lay
the bet backed by the punter and offer the odds. Betting exchanges cut
out the bookie and allow punters to both back and lay bets and offer
odds. In this sense, they work not unlike stock exchanges. This article
will primarily discuss bet laying on races and how to effective use a
horse racing system to find your horses and lay the right odds to
maximize the opportunity for a payout.

It is probably worthwhile at this point to discuss what is meant by
“laying a bet.” When you lay a bet, you are betting that a particular
horse will lose. This is the position that the bookie typically takes.
Betting exchanges seek to hook up those who back and lay a horse and
allow them the opportunity to agree on odds. At this point, simple math
comes into the equation, and it is time to find a strategy. Any horse
racing system that focuses on lay betters needs to keep several
considerations in mind.

The first thing any horse racing system will tell you is that you
should never stake more than you can afford to lose. Betting is at its core
a game of chance and even the most careful horse racing system will
experience bad luck occasionally.

Another thing to keep in mind when building your horse racing system is
to remember that you don’t have to bet on every single race. Do your
homework, study the horses, study the tracks, and study the conditions
forecasted for race day and when you find that backers are willing to
take odds that you feel are in your favor, then it is time to lay your
bets. If you cannot get odds that you feel are favorable, it is best to
sit that particular race out.

Another thing to remember when consulting or forming your own horse
racing system is that you should not throw good money after bad. After
experiencing a run of bad luck, a punter may feel inclined to place
larger and larger bets in an effort to recover monies lost. While this
strategy may get you out of trouble on the rare occasion, it is almost
always a sure loser. Remember, in the game of gambling, losing money is a
part of life and a run of bad luck should not cause one to change their
strategy. Any horse racing system that changes based on the results of
a few previous races is a weak one at its foundation and it should be
discarded for a more consistent horse racing system.

It is possible to make money laying bets, but it is always necessary to
do your homework and be prepared for losses. Gambling in any form is
not for the faint hearted. Now, go out there, pick those sure losers,
offer odds and have fun! In the end, you may be able to make a little
bit of money as well.

Steve Merril’s College Fullcourt Report (Mar. 14)

The NIT and the NCAA Tournament both begin tonight as 14 teams start play in the National Invitation Tournement, while Hampton and Monmouth officially start the NCAA Tournament by participating in the play-in game.

Below is a look at both college basketball games on ESPN national television for Tuesday night.

NCAA Tournament

HAMPTON vs. MONMOUTH (-4, 124) (at Dayton, OH) (ESPN)

It is no surprise that Hampton is meeting Monmouth in the play-in game as these two clubs have the two weakest RPI’s in this year’s tournament. Hampton is the worst team in the Field of 65 with a RPI of 284 and the Pirates needed to win four games in four days last week in the Mid-Eastern Conference tournament. The Pirates won outright in the finals, 60-56, as a 5-point underdog versus the top team in the conference, Delaware State, who had a solid RPI of 123.

Hampton started the season just 1-7 SU as they were missing some key players in November and December; however the Pirates finished with a solid 15-8 SU run over their past twenty-three games. Hampton played an incredibly weak schedule as they faced only seven teams ranked in the RPI top 200 and they went just 2-5 SU in those seven games.

Monmouth also pulled an upset in their conference tournament and beat the top two teams, Central Connecticut State and Fairleigh Dickinson, to ensure a bid. Monmouth has the second worst RPI in the Field of 65 this year. Monmouth’s RPI is 144 and they were 7-8 SU versus the top 200 opponents they faced.

Both teams have solid defenses as each club lead their conferences in field goal percentage allowed. Hampton allowed just 39.1 percent and Monmouth permitted only 40.8 percent in conference games this season.

NIT

VIRGINIA at STANFORD (-4 , 129 ) (ESPN)

Both Virginia and Stanford have struggled down the stretch as Cavaliers were 1-4 SU (1-3-1 ATS) over the past five games while Stanford was 2-4 SU (1-5 ATS) over their final six games.

There have been no recent head-to-head meetings between these squads; however they did have three common opponents this season (Gonzaga, Virginia Tech, and Arizona). Virginia lost both games versus Arizona and Gonzaga and was 3-0 SU/ATS in three meetings versus in-state rival Virginia Tech, including a recent win in the ACC Tournament last Thursday.

Stanford lost both games versus Gonzaga and Virginia Tech and also went 0-3 SU (1-2 ATS) in three meetings versus conference rival Arizona, including a loss last Thursday in the PAC 10 Tournament.

Overall, Virginia was 3-2 SU (4-1 ATS) against common opponents this season, while Stanford was 0-5 SU (2-3 ATS) in those same games. Virginia was outscored by an average score of 63-69 per game and outshot 43-45 percent from the field, while Stanford lost by average score of 70-76, but outshot their opponents 46-45 percent overall.

Stanford has the edge of playing this game on their home court, where the Cardinal were 10-3 SU this season. Virginia was just 4-11 SU away from home, but the Cavaliers do have a slightly higher RPI of 80, while Stanford finished with a RPI of 86. Virginia also fared better against quality teams, going 5-12 SU versus the RPI Top 100, while Stanford was just 2-9 SU versus that same level of competition.

Pai Gow Poker Basics

Using the standard poker hand ranking methods (see below), the players must organize their cards so that the five card hand is of higher value than the two card hand. If both hands beat the banker’s two hands, the player wins. If both hands lose, the player loses. If one hand is higher and the other lower, the hand is a draw or push. Finally, if both hands are exactly equal in value to the banker’s two hands, the banker wins.

In calculating the hand ranking, the joker is used as an Ace or to complete any straight or any flush. Bets are placed between the banker (which may be the House or another player acting as banker) and the other players. The House charges a 5% commission on all winning wagers. There is no commission charged for tied or losing wagers. If you require assistance, the dealer or supervisor will be happy to assist you in setting the highest possible potential ranking hand according to House Ways. However, we cannot be responsible for any losses that may be incurred. The order of hands from highest to lowest is as follows:

Poker Hand Rankings

1. 5 Aces (including joker)
2. Royal Flush
3. Straight Flush (A,2,3,4,5 highest ranking straight flush)
4. 4 of a Kind
5. Full House
6. Flush
7. Straight (A2,3,4,5 the 2nd highest straight)
8. Three Of A Kind

9. Two Pair
10. One Pair
11. High Card

A Plus B Equals C: A Poker Player’s Worth is Judged by his Bottom Line

New poker strategies are so simple to implement: find out what works, do it over and over and count your profits.

Being a member of the Church of Texas Holdem is fantastic. Like all churches, you will receive regular donations from players, using our proven poker strategies to maximise the money they’re leaving in your collection plate.

However, there’s one thing you absolutely must do: keep records.

Church of Texas Holdem Psalm #3:
Thou must record thy wins and thy loses; for it is the sum of all a man’s achievements which create his bottom line.

Allow me to refer to a heathen’s viewpoint to explain why this, of all poker strategies, is so important.

Before I found (and founded!) the Church of Texas Holdem, I was lost in the wilderness. I went years without writing down a single entry in a poker diary or spreadsheet. Poker strategy was a foreign concept. I knew I was winning overall, because I started with $100 in December 2003 and had withdrawn many thousands of dollars.

But I had no idea how much I had won, how much I had withdrawn during a week, month or year, whether my experiments in limit cash games were successful, or anything actually useful. I was blind.

A simple spreadsheet gave me eyes.

Once I began making detailed notes, it clarified my success and failure at poker, as well as keeping me more focused. It really hurt to write down a loss. But the main difference was seeing on the page a record of my wins and withdrawls.

I realised that I could win, consistently, and the best proof of that was there in black and white.
It’s very easy to keep ’score’ of your achievements. You don’t need a degree in accounting, or specialist knowledge of spreadsheets. Even a simple Word file which you update manually with a calculator applet will suffice. It’s a lot better than guesswork.

Your notes should include the type of game you play, if you play more than one type. Examples are detailed notes of the Sit-and-Go buy-ins, INCLUDING the rake (it’s a vital factor), where you finish and your total amount cashed out.

Cash game details should include the type of game you play (fixed-, pot- or no-limit), the buy-in level ($5-10 or whatever) and your daily result.

How detailed you get is up to you. I have read plenty of poker strategies from professional players, who are obsessive about your most profitable level of play, how much you take per hour and whether a certain play has positive expectation in the long run. Dry, boring stuff.

I tried keeping notes of time spent at each of the various cash games, but for me at least, that got too tedious. After all, on some days you might be content with your wins in the first half-hour, and on another day it might be a 15-hour grind. Who cares what my hourly rate is? It’s really irrelevant. I work from home. As long as I’m paying my way, that’s all that matters.

Some poker strategies can draw on successful marketing from other places. Here’s one I came up with recently.

Give yourself something tangible to shoot for. If you are familiar with the Air Miles promotional websites, their Dream Meter is a great way to incentivise. As you collect Air Miles, the meter fills up a bar based on the percentage of your dream purchase you have accumulated.

Do the same with your poker. There’s nothing like physical evidence of success to galvinise you to achieve more of it. It may be as simple as paying your mortgage every month. Or settling a long-term debt that’s been around your neck like a millstone. What floats your Ark might be a giant plasma TV, or a holiday in a dream destination.

Write a dollar value for your personal target alongside your withdrawls total. Now you can see how close you are to your target, it will make you even more determined to plug any leaks in your poker.

Strategies are all great in theory. I’d love to hear from anybody who has never kept records before, and found it works for them.

Here endeth the lesson.

Casino Games - There Is Something For Everyone

Casino games are as diverse as the gambling houses themselves. Poker alone includes variations such as stud, draw, Texas Hold-em and many others. Gambling houses often feature so many games it’s hard to know where to start. Indeed, some people take their first night at a given casino as sort of an orientation tour to learn what kind of gambling is on offer.

The casino’s electronic versions of the regular games are also quirky and fun. There are serious video poker players who stake out the high-paying machines, and gamble only on them. Those who watch a serious video poker player long enough will learn some of their strategies, like the “Jacks or better” version where players favor hands, as the name implies, with a face card in it.

Casino dice games are exciting, but sometimes complicated. Variations include “street craps,” “bank craps” and what some people call “Grand Hazard”. It’s good to know what version of game is going on at the table before you lay your money down. Is the casino paying winners who roll seven or eleven? Or are you gambling, roulette style; on the numbers that come up on the dice roll?

Roulette is said to be one of the most challenging games in the casino. The roulette wheel has up to 38 numbered positions for the little ball to land in. You can start your gambling on a single number, odds or evens and other combinations. If you are a beginner, it’s best to research this one online or at your local bookstore first, as the game can be not only mesmerizing, but also expensive for a beginner.

Casino games are fun, but sometimes it’s a good idea to research first, learn the rules, and then go to the casino armed with your understanding of the rules. This insures maximum fun and a good night out. So what are you waiting for? Familiarize yourself with casino rules and get started having fun!
