Ramp It Up!

Today’s lifestyle is highly competitive and difficult especially for disabled persons. Nevertheless, disabled individuals should enjoy the same quality of life that able-bodied individuals experience. Public and private places should be built with ramps and structures that make them accessible even to disabled persons. If your workplace does not have ramps or facilities for disabled individuals, you can talk with your employer to make some adjustments.

Ramps differ in places and come in many designs but all of them have the same purpose - to make an entry accessible to people in wheelchairs, scooters, walkers or anyone else who cannot use the stairs. Building a ramp is not as easy as putting a flat piece of wood in place where the wheelchair can pass through. In building a ramp certain factors need to be considered. Who will use the ramp? How much room do you have? Will the ramp be permanent or temporary? How much weight are you expecting it will have to support? How much will it cost?

For permanent ramps, build metal or concrete ramp. Wood ramps can be pleasing but they are not very durable and can easily crack. Although metal ramps are strong, its surface can get severely hot in the summer. Concrete ramps are durable and ideal in many conditions but they are very difficult to remove. Thus, you need to carefully consider how the ramps will be used before building it to avoid any problem and costly mistake.

Any person with basic carpentry skill can build a ramp. However, it takes more than that to build a good ramp. It may be a good option to let the one who will use it design the ramp if the person who will design it does not have enough experience with ramps and knowledge of the design guidelines. Fortunately today, cluelessness in ramp creation is declining. The accessibility regulations that were drawn after the passage of the American Disabilities Act have given architects guideline to work with. Keep in mind that ramp construction is not rocket science, thus, the guidelines of the ADA act gave a clear understanding of the procedure and considerations for good ramp building that even someone with no understanding of gravity can build and design a good ramp.

But remember, from time to time wooden ramps may need paint jobs and the no-skid rolled roofing surface needs to be occasionally replaced. Likewise, metal ramps may need certain joints to be re-welded and rust removed. Thus, whichever type of ramp you build the key to keeping them safe is by complying with the American Disabilities Act codes and maintaining the ramps regularly.

Multiple Sclerosis - What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Scientists are still researching the genetic side of Multiple Sclerosis, because certain ethnic groups do and do not get Multiple Sclerosis. For instance, Eskimos, Gypsies and African Bantu never develop Multiple Sclerosis, and Asians, North and South American natives very rarely get the disease. There are strong links between family members and Multiple Sclerosis. The chance of developing Multiple Sclerosis increases greatly if an immediate family member has the disease.

Though researchers know that genetics have a lot to do with Multiple Sclerosis, still other researchers believe that the disease is caused or at lease triggered by environmental factors. It is possible that patients have the gene that triggers the immune system attack, and that all of this could be caused to begin by an environmental factor taking place. This theory could account for why certain ethnic groups do and do not get Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis ranges in severity, from fairly minimal to very debilitating. There are a variety of treatments for Multiple Sclerosis, including various prescription drugs that have recently been developed. Though these medicines cannot completely cure Multiple Sclerosis, they do help to minimize the debilitating symptoms that Multiple Sclerosis causes. Among the most popular of these Multiple Sclerosis treatment drugs are Avonex and Betaseron. These drugs help patients to have better immune system functioning, and they can lessen the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis for many years.

Why Outsource to an Independent Review Organization (IRO)?

Many payers and medical management companies have not discovered the power of outsourcing their medical decision making to an independent review organization…often because they’ve already assembled their own panel of internal doctors or using their own medical staff to make such decisions. Yet with rising state and federal regulations regarding the need for objective, unbiased decision based purely on medical fact, independent review organizations (IROs) offer a simple, easy alternative to other forms of medical decision making, including pre-authorizations that are critical for delivering high quality care according to patient needs.

IROs play an important role in providing care in America’s health care system today. Over the last couple of decades, they evolved as a result of the patient rights movement. Patients increasingly demanded a fair hearing and a fair decision about whether or not they would be approved medical treatments. IROs filled that need.

IROs began working by adjudicating and making decisions on medical claims in the government sector. Over the last several years, IROs have been utilized increasingly by mainstream health plans and others making such determinations. IROs serve a vital role by advocating for the patient while making sure that each patient only receives the care they deserve based upon medical fact. Bottom line, IROs eliminate wasteful and unnecessary treatments.

If you’re a medical management company or a payer, outsourcing to an IRO is a great way to assure that you make fact-based medical claims decisions and pre-authorizations every timeeven the most expensive and complex claims and treatments. IROs have mechanisms in place to provide decision making with a high degree of efficiency and at a very low cost.

A good IRO has a full time recruiting and credentialing function that builds and maintains a specialist panel with all types of physicians and sub-specialists, as well as allied health care professionals. By using its panel, an IRO can easily match each case with a like healthcare specialist to make independent and objective medical decisions. An Independent Review Organization often has a highly automated workflow for routing cases to those physicians, getting their determinations in an efficient manner and typing and producing the written reviews that substantiate the decision in each case. IROs amortize their costs across hundreds (if not thousands) of monthly cases. This advantageous to a payer or medical management firm that doesn’t have similar case loads and therefore can not achieve the same economy of scale.

If your organization still has not unlocked the power an Independent Review Organization for making claims decisions and pre-authorizations, consider outsourcing as a strategy for improving your quality of care for your patient and members. Independent Review Organizations deliver exceptional valuewith fast turn around times at low cost.

Affordable Healthcare: Unaffordable Healthcare Insurance

Copyright 2006 Majella.us

If you think you have healthcare insurance, here are a few
simple questions you might ask yourself: Have you met your
deductible? If so, what were your out of pocket costs for the
year? How much did you and your employer pay for your healthcare
insurance last year and what did you get for it? And where is
your money going? According to the California Health Care
Foundation[1] 45 million Americans are “uninsured.” While this
number may seem alarming, consider the fact that 100% of
American’s are essentially uninsured on the 1st day of January,
every year, and they remain so until they have met their
deductibles–something that insurance companies are increasingly
making an impossible thing to do. You owe it to yourself to find
out the actual costs of healthcare in order to make intelligent
decisions about what you CAN afford. Here are some more
statistics that you might find alarming:

1. In 2004, the average healthcare premium employers were
charged for a family of four averaged $9,950[2].

2. By 2006, it is predicted that the average annual family
insurance premium will reach $14,500[3].

3. National surveys indicate that the primary reason for being
uninsured is for the simple reason that insurance is not
affordable[4].

4. There are more Americans (50%) who are now worried that they
cannot afford their healthcare insurance than there are (42%)
who report being worried about not being able to afford their
healthcare[5].

How do bills get paid?

Don’t be fooled by the difference between billing and
reimbursement. Your insurance company will readily send you a
copy of the amount that was billed for your latest healthcare
encounter. What was actually paid–if anything–however, is
actually another story and it would behoove you to find this out
for yourself. Let me give you an example.

On October 6, 2003, the hospital sent a bill to my insurance
carrier (Blue Cross of California) in the amount of $11,569.20
for “Inpatient Services” related to an uncomplicated c-section
and a 2-day stay. My insurance carrier “discounted” the bill by
$9,869.20 to $1,700.00. This is the “fair and reasonable” amount
they “pay” for this service. But wait, who paid? I did! This
claim put me over my deductible for the year by whopping $7.70.
The amount applied to a member’s deductible is always the amount
billed minus the “patient savings” minus any insurance
reimbursement and amounts “not allowed.”

Mark my word, essentially, you will require major surgery or you
will have a significant accident that results in enormous bills
before you will meet your deductible–if you are still even able
to meet this amount at all. And until you exceed this amount,
you are a cash paying patient. Make no mistake about it.

See for yourself. In my case, the amount applied to the
deductible for the above transaction was: $11,569.20 - $9,869.20
- $11.00 = $1,689.00.

If you are still a non-believer, I can show you the bill on
April 4, 2003 for $766 where I paid $266 and only $84.26 was
applied to the deductible. I have many more examples and I’m
sure that if you pay attention, you will find plenty of your own.

But can you really afford to pay cash for healthcare?

Absolutely! What you can’t afford, is healthcare insurance. If
you have a family, you already know that this is true. If you
are single–maybe, but why throw your money down the toilet when
you can get so much more for your hard earned cash!? I have a
wife and 4 kids. To pay $6,000.00 in premiums and miscellaneous
fees this year is simply unacceptable. I’m joining the ranks of
the uninsured and I have a good job! I just called Hollywood
Presbyterian Hospital to get an update on the cost of a
c-section. Low and behold, the cash price for a c-section is
$3,000.00. You can call yourself.

But what if you get injured and have massive bills? You have too
much to loose.

Of course you do. Hopefully, however, you are not ignorant
enough to believe that your healthcare insurance company is
going to bail you out under these circumstances. If for some God
forsaken reason you are hit by a truck and spend 2 months in the
hospital accumulating millions of dollars in bills, I am afraid
that you will still be in a pickle because your insurance
carrier is sure to sue the trucker’s insurance carrier etc. for
the next 10 years while the collectors come after you for unpaid
bills.

You owe it to yourself to get smart and stop giving your hard
earned cash to this scandalous industry. Please feel free to
comment on this story for a lively discussion!

“D”

I got an instant message from a woman that we will just refer to as “D” telling me that she was having trouble with her computer and that my wife had mentioned to her that I may be able to help. Most guys would be pissed that someone would volunteer them without out talking about it first, but I trust my wife’s judgment and never question her actions in such events. In many cases when my wife asks me to help one of her friends I do not need to know how or why and I get the job done as if I were getting paid to do it. Sick huh!

Anyway “D” and my wife talk often and she is very aware of my other websites. (adult) so of course the conversation leans in that direction. I was trying to help “D” understand what drives us to be so addicted to our fetishes and to my surprise it would seem I had met my match. Turns out that I under estimated “D” and she gave me a perspective that I had never even thought of.

I was trying to point out why a guy loves a short skirt, why legs attract attention, why a voyeur gazes relentlessly at the hem of a women’s dress and also why nothing is wrong with it. I told her about the game we play where we try to get caught looking at a woman’s thighs in hopes that she may play along and part them slightly while at the same time giving us a discreet smirk.

I told her that it’s not about the size or shape of the woman, but more about the time she took to make herself beautiful and sexy and now she is on display for guys like us to enjoy as we pass her ever so quickly on the city streets.

I told her that the excitement for a voyeur is not what he sees, it is the fact that he is not supposed to see it. I explained that when a guy is caught looking at a woman’s legs and with out warning the view gets better with the help of a slow “leg cross” or knees drifting apart or maybe even the all too famous “squat down and dig in your bag” move that the thrill is the more so about the unspoken sexual encounter you shared with your subject rather than seeing the soft cotton or silk panties she shared with you.

Turns out that “D” is a little smarter than I am and I was over explaining myself. She hit me back with her little fetish. You see, men are selfish sometimes and treat women as though they are in place only to entertain us. I agree that this is an awesome perspective on why females exist, but let me drop the hammer here and now. It turns out that “D” has a thing for Men in “pressed perfect” suits! No way! I also did a little more digging after this and with the help of google and some other female friends I found out that many women have this little secret and some even go on to love “men in uniforms”

Just as we share stories about a great pair of legs we saw on the bus, “D” went at far as to tell me about an experience she had watching a man buy clothes at a popular Men’sware store. How she not only helped herself to some really hot visuals but also approached her subject and helped him pick out and purchase 5 suits which he gladly modeled for her.

“D” You Sly Dog, You!

So be careful when you guys head out to girl watch. The tables could turn at any second and the hunter may end up being the hunted!

PS: We never did solve the computer problem.

Wisdom Through the Ages

I have a friend who is much older than she looks. Since I know that she generally takes good care of herself by eating well and exercising (great skin and what a fit body!), I once asked her if there was one thing she did that she felt contributed the most to her youthful look and she replied “I try to sleep long enough every night so that I wake up naturally”. (I had hoped to get the name of some new amazing beauty treatment).

There’s lots of new research out there attempting to fully understand the effect that disturbed sleep has on health. Although, those of us who have had a newborn baby in the house KNOW without the science what sleep deprivation does to you…OH BOY!

But seriously, there are more and more indicators of the association between lack of sleep and many of the “big” killers.

Lack of sleep appears to increase the production of stress hormones and drives up blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Moreover, people who are sleep-deprived have higher levels of chemicals in the blood which indicate a heightened state of inflammation in the body, a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes (big killers)…. All of which can lead to a shortened life.

Scientists tell us that, for the majority of people, seven to nine hours per night of sleep is needed for optimal functioning. And as more and more studies of the body processes that take place during sleep are uncovered, it becomes clearer that getting enough sleep is really important in the prevention of disease. The research even points to the idea that, in addition to the big killers, the risk of obesity increases with less than 6 or 7 hours of sleep per night. Obesity? Really?

Hold on. The idea that excess fat accumulation happens because of lack of sleep goes against my personal logic. After all, if you stay awake more hours it seems like you would burn more calories than if you were sleeping. Well, apparently you do burn more calories….but there’s a pitfall: the brain chemicals involved with appetite signals go wacky. So much for that line of thinking…

The two recently identified chemicals involved with appetite are called leptin and ghrelin. Leptin, which is produced by the fat cells, suppresses appetite and ghrelin increases it. When the duration of the sleep is shorter or sleep is interrupted, the leptin levels drop and ghrelin increases, and sends hunger signals to the brain. That explains the popularity of the midnight snack!

Back to my friend’s idea of sleeping until you wake up naturally. Last summer, I decided to try it for a couple of weeks (with the alarm set as backup in case I slept TOO late). To do this, I had to go to bed a bit earlier. You know what happened? Except for the one night I stayed up too late with my girlfriends and woke up too early, I slept between seven and eight hours. I felt great and looked rested. More importantly, I became more tuned into my own body’s sleep requirements. Good lesson.

The gist of it all? My friend is on to something. Sleep IS….. good for you.

“The Little Corporation Who Cried Wolf” Part 2

So…are you guys all revved up and ready to go? Are you committed to doing whatever it takes to motivate your staff and create a super-charged, mega-energized department??

As we discussed last time, your attitude and motivation level is absolutely critical to the success of your department re-energization plan. This plan just cannot work if you are anything less that 100% committed and motivated to make it happen. It’s up to you to model your work ethic and attitude to your staff.

Now I’m not saying all of this to put undue pressure on you. I doubt you need any more of that. I’m just trying to over-emphasize it so that you will never lose sight of the importance you play in all of this. On those days that you find yourself discouraged or un-motivated, remind yourself that YOU are the key to your department’s success!!!

Okay, enough of that, let’s get onto the fun stuff. Uh, let me re-phrase that…Let’s get onto the stuff. Or should I re-phrase it yet again, perhaps a bit more formally this time…Let us proceed with the discussion of employee motivation techniques which, when implemented consistently over a period of time, will significantly enhance the attitude, motivation levels and therefore productivity of one’s staff.

Nah, I like let’s get onto the stuff better. But what is this stuff? Well, there are six parts to this stuff. So today we’ll focus on parts 1 -3, and next issue we’ll wrap it up.

Stuff 1: Let them know your plans.

As you may have heard me say before, communication is KEY. Especially when you are dealing with a situation like our current one. In our situation we are presuming that employees are de-moralized and de-motivated because Senior Management has been less than truthful or
communicative. It’s up to you to assure your staff that you DO believe in telling them the truth and that you plan to keep them in the loop as much as you can.

So tell them you are sorry that things have been especially tough and tell them that you are committed to turning things around so that your department can be a functional AND fun place to work.

Announce that you are launching a plan to make your department the BEST and ask for their input. Ask them for ideas as to how you can work together to accomplish your goal of creating the “super-department.”

Make sure to impress upon them that you are totally committed to the effort and that it is NOT just some B.S. cheerleading meeting.

Stuff 2 Be involved, be visible and be around.

Now more than ever before it’s really beneficial for you to be in your department. This shows your staff that you are involved in the daily departmental issues - you’re not just a figure-head sitting in your office reading the WSJ.

So get out there. Help your employees out. Walk around and ask them how things are going. Be available for questions or consultation. Show them that you are part of the team and are there to help them be successful.

And while you’re out there, spread good vibes. Don’t seem to be walking around just looking for problems (although you do want to keep an eye out for those). Be an upbeat, positive role-model for your employees. They need it!!

Stuff 3 Clarify your expectations.

To get this ship running smoothly, you’ll need to let your crew know exactly what they need to be doing. Now I’m not talking about micro-managing here. You don’t need to hover and hand-hold to make sure that things are getting done to your liking. What I do mean is clarifying expectations in a more general manner.

Pull out those job descriptions and review them. Are they current? Are your employees performing functions that aren’t really even necessary? Since you are spending more time in your department now, it should be easy for you to get a handle on who’s spending their time doing what. Again, ask for their input. Ask them about how they see their role in the department and what they feel their most important responsibilities are.

Action Steps for Success
Now that the first three steps, or should I say “stuffs” have been outlined, it’s time to make them work for you.

In order to let the team in on your department re-energization plans, schedule a really fun meeting. Put on your best “rah, rah team” hat and write up an outline of the things you are going to discuss and the kinds of questions you are going to ask to get people involved. To set the tone, have food and drinks available. But try to do something unusual. Pizza and donuts are so overdone, don’t you think?

Onto the be involved, be visible and be around piece…it’s pretty simple in theory, but when it comes to actually making it happen, it will be harder than you think. To get yourself in the groove, schedule lots of time on your calendar for this. Make yourself do it. It is really important!!

Last, but certainly not least and certainly not the most fun, clarifying your expectations of your team. Pretty straightforward this one, but again the kind of a thing you have to force yourself to do. Who wants to review job descriptions, right? Yuck!! But it’s got to be done, so just get it over with. You’ll be glad when it’s over and it’s well worth the effort!!

Now don’t be overwhelmed. Yes, it’s a lot of work, but it is sooooooooooo worth it. Your department will start to run more smoothly, productivity will increase, your employees will be happier and YOUR stress level will radically decrease. So whenever you’re discouraged about the plan, remember the outcomes.

Now go out there and be a STAR!!

Basic information about Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, fatty substance that is found in every
cell of the body. It is involved in the production of cell
membranes, some hormones, vitamin D, bile acids, and other
tissues in the body. It also insulates nerves. Cholesterol is
produced in the liver, but we also get cholesterol from our diet.

The amount of cholesterol in the body depends on factors such as
the rate of cholesterol production in the liver, the rate of
cholesterol clearance from the body, the amount of dietary fat
(particularly saturated fat) and to a lesser extent, cholesterol
consumed.

The excess cholesterol in our body circulates in the
bloodstream. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can clog
blood vessels and increase the risk fro heart disease and stroke.

Different types of Cholesterol

Low-Density Lipoprotein (or LDL) cholesterol is a bad type of
cholesterol that is most likely to clog blood vessels,
increasing you risk for heart disease. High-Density Lipoprotein
(or HDL) cholesterol is a good type of cholesterol. HDL
cholesterol helps clear the LDL cholesterol out of the blood and
reduces your risk for heart disease.

Cholesterol & Heart Disease

High cholesterol is one of the major contributors to heart
disease. Research strongly indicates that lowering of
cholesterol leads to a drop in the occurrence of heart disease.
The main reason for this is because with less blood cholesterol,
there is less plaque formation within the arterial walls. This
will reduce the chances or an artery becoming blocked and
causing a heart attack or stroke. Also, blood will flow through
arteries with greater ease and this can lower blood pressure.

Reasons which lead to a Rise in Cholesterol:

Poor eating habits Smoking Excess weight or Obesity Heredity
factor Daily Stress Over Alcohol consumption

Ways to control or lessen Cholesterol:

Good eating habits It is very important to follow good eating
habits in order to lower your cholesterol.

Regular exercising Experts recommend at least 30 minutes or more
of moderate-intensity physical activity five days a week for at
least 12 weeks for significant cholesterol reduction.

Weight loss and maintaining it You can lower your LDL (”bad
cholesterol”) and elevate your HDL (”good cholesterol”) just by
dropping some pounds.

Salsa Dance: The Greatest Secret to Health, Fitness & Happiness

Today, I wanted to share with you the greatest secret I’ve
discovered in my relatively short life. It goes to the very core
of what people desire in their lives, and it boils down to
simply this. Dance! What’s the big secret about that, right?
Well, it’s a little complicated. Why Salsa Dance? Why dance at
all? It’s not terribly easy, and it does take some time and
effort to get proficient at it. You risk looking foolish, you
have to interact with other people, conquer your fears of the
unknown, and it often costs you money to do it. But if you
remember anything from this report, remember how important it is
to take that first step!

I want to tell you what makes it so great! I’m going to detail,
in a simple list, the benefits most people find through dance,
and salsa dance in particular (ok, I may be a little biased -
these benefits do apply to all types of dance). ;) These are in
no particular order, as I didn’t want to choose what’s benefit
is more important than another.

1) Social Benefits: You’ll meet more people dancing, than in any
other single activity on the face of the planet! Singles bars?
Ha! Health clubs? No way. You’ll laugh at the things you used to
do to meet people, because once you dance, it all becomes so
easy - it’s effortless. We devote an entire newsletter to this
later on - so stay tuned, but rest assured your social,
business, and play network (of friends, associates, and …)
will grow exponentially. Once you learn this single, amazingly
fun skill, you will never be far from being able to meet
someone, and have an immediate connection. No matter where you
are in the world, no matter what language everyone speaks - It’s
nothing short of miraculous!

2) What if you’ve already found that special someone, and you’re
not looking to expand your social circle? Well, the benefits to
couples, married or not, is equally as impressive as point #1.
The bond it will create between the two of you, and the immense
passions that will ensue, will (re)-ignite any relationship.
Once again, its got to be experienced to be believed, but, a
couple that dance’s together, stay’s together! Dance is the
answer (specifically salsa dance - I just had to say it . . .
again). ;) It helps you relate to others in a passionate,
honest, and unique way.

3) Confidence - You’ll become more comfortable with yourself,
and you’ll find your confidence affects every aspect of your
life. You’ll find confidence that extends to many aspects of
your life, far beyond your dancing. Yes, this confidence will
begin to show itself after your very first lesson, just by
conquering your doubts and fears, and taking action to better
yourself. As you progress, so will your level of confidence in
what you can do! Everyone will see the difference - your
friends, your boss, your family. We’re not talking about
confidence in your dance abilities, but rather, confidence in
yourself. Dance has powerful benefits that simply are not
readily apparent when you get started.

4) Self Expression - The ability to express your self, verbally
or with movement, is important to us all. Perhaps you’ll have to
hear and feel the music first, to fully grasp this one, but the
ability to express yourself, with another person, to beautiful,
exciting and passionate music, fulfills a basic human need (that
you may not even know you have). Especially in an Urban jungle,
or in the confines of your cubicle or office, and throughout
your work life, opportunities to truly express yourself are few
and far between. This will make you a happier person, and
provide you an outlet that perhaps you did not even realize that
you needed. There’s one way to find out - and it requires you to
take that first step!

5) Weight Loss - Self explanatory. You lose weight, you feel
better about yourself, you live longer. Personally, I used to
weigh 40 pounds more, and had tried every diet on the planet!
Who would have though, all I had to do was dance. I wish I had
known about this earlier. More on this in a separate newsletter
- coming soon. Long and short, dance will help you lose weight,
and get fit. In addition, since it’s so much fun, you’ll be
doing more of it than any other exercise I can think of.

6) Flexibility, Coordination and posture: Not only will these
benefits affect you, but they also affect how people see you at
first glance. You’ll have better posture, and hold yourself
better - you’ll even walk better. It’s just that good.

7) Happiness and Fulfillment - I’m not going to get religious,
or too spiritual, but we’re all here to lead good lives. To
affect others, or to find our places in the world, is no easy
task. To be honest with ourselves is difficult, and that says
nothing about being truthful to others. Dance is a way to
happiness! It’s a way to become honest with your self, and to
eventually find that fulfillment that perhaps is lacking.

And finally, is dance truly for everyone? Really, can anyone do
it? Is this the answer for every person that has a problem on
the planet? The lonely? The overweight? The old, the angry, the
disillusioned, the poor? In my eyes - yes, it can provide an
answer to almost everyone. Not everyone can become the greatest
dancer in the world, but everyone has something to gain from the
effort. Some people will be affected more than others, some
people will try it and move on, but everyone needs to make the
attempt. The more reasons you can think of NOT to do it - the
more you’re probably going to benefit from it. I can say that
from personal experience!

This report just scratches the surface. I mean it - you’ll have
dozens more topics to add to this after your first month. And
more than that, you’re going to have a great time taking these
classes, adding a passion and a skill to your life that’s going
to last you forever. So? Take that first step! Learn to Salsa
