Anthony Loeff medical volunteer is testing screen readers for people suffering from blindness

Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. This season Anthony Loeff nonprofit worker is reporting digital tools for people who are blind The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers.

More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader.

The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. However functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

Near 21 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

Further, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. Most legally blind people 56 percent do not use computers. The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix.

5 Tips For Lowering Blood Pressure Naturally

For every three American adults, one is estimated to have high blood pressure. Around 65 million Americans over the age of 20 have high blood pressure. Scary statistics? You bet. Especially if you consider the fact that, if left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can result in leading causes of death like heart failure, stroke, aneurysm, heart attack, and kidney failure.

Here are the tips to lowering blood pressure naturally:

1. Go easy on the saltshaker.

People consume around two teaspoons of salt a day, an amount that must be lessened for those with high blood pressure. Since a large portion of the sodium you take in is from processed foods, watch out for these. In addition, try using spices, lemon, and salt-free seasoning blends for seasoning what you cook.

2. Improve your diet.

One of the important points in lowering your blood pressure naturally is improving your diet and eating healthier. By limiting the sweets and red meat you take in, and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains (the basics of the famed Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension - or DASH - diet), you’re definitely on your way to lower blood pressure.

3. Exercise.

Regular physical activity lowers blood pressure naturally and improves blood cholesterol levels. Exercise is important since it will help you maintain a healthy weight; being overweight raises your chances of developing high blood pressure. You will probably notice a decrease in your blood pressure within the first nine or ten weeks of regular exercise (around half an hour at least four or five days a week of physical activities like jogging, cycling, swimming, brisk walking and so on).

4. Decaf, please.

Stay away from caffeine, even if you may find it difficult to function in the morning without your cup of coffee. Caffeine does bad things to your blood pressure by increasing the effects of stress and getting your heart to start pumping like there’s no tomorrow. To help lower your blood pressure naturally, get decaf instead.

5. Relax.

Close your eyes. Breathe in. Breathe out. Meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques can also help to bring your blood pressure down. You can learn these activities from videos or by taking classes.

Family & Friends Walk to Honor a Young Woman’s Fight Against Cancer

When her children’s babysitter was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in January of this year, Shannon Draisey knew she had to help. Since Cheryl enjoyed walking, a walk-a-thon was a fitting event and so one was planned to raise money for her cancer treatment.

Unfortunately Cheryl’s condition worsened rather quickly and she passed away on March 11th. However plans continued for the walk in her honor and the name was changed to the 1st Annual Memory March for Markley 2 Mile Run/Walk.

Everyone was welcome to come help celebrate Cheryl’s life, support her family and raise awareness about lung cancer. Besides walkers there were also runners, moms with strollers, kids on bikes and grandparents who participated.

Shannon said, “I used the information from Step by Step Fundraising to assist me in sending out letters to business/organizations asking for their support as a sponsor, in newspaper ads and in the sponsor kit the I created for my walk.”

The walk was April 30, 2005 at a local park. Each participant received a t-shirt with the event date and a picture of Cheryl. Especially since many of the participants were friends or family, the t-shirts were greatly appreciated. Over 100 people attended the walk, and after expenses the event raised $3600 for the family.

There was a special kickoff ceremony with a prayer and balloon release. The balloons were in lavender, which is the general cancer awareness color and ivory/clear, the lung cancer awareness color.

Since the walk was to benefit an individual and not a registered non profit organization, donors were not allowed to consider contributions as tax deductible. However, Shannon didn’t find this to be too much of a problem and had many people including businesses donate money, goods and services.

Shannon sent out approximately 200 letters to local business and organizations which resulted in 28 sponsors. Some of them were monetary and some contributed water, the sign for the walk, a gator to get around the park in, and other supplies.

“I would have to say personal friends of Cheryl made the walk a success. With over 100 people that showed up, all of them knew Cheryl and wanted to help. But by putting an ad in our local newspaper weekly for a month prior to the walk helped to generate some additional walkers.”

When asked what advice she would give to other walk organizers, Shannon replied, “If you want to organize a run/walk make sure you get in touch with someone who has organized one in the past. They have valuable information, tips and do’s and dont’s that will help make your walk a success.”

While this year’s walk was for the family of one person effected by cancer, next year’s walk will be expanded to focus on raising awareness about lung cancer prevention. Shannon would like to help educate the public about the dangers of radon levels in basements, which Cheryl’s doctors believe was the reason that she developed lung cancer.

Next year’s walk will benefit radon research or lung cancer research. Shannon is also considering donating a portion of the proceeds to the local cancer coalition and starting a scholarship or humanitarian award in Cheryl’s name.

Your Aging Parents: an “Old Folks” Home or Sanctuary - FamilyVision Column

“No, I’ve been the one sacrificing my life to accommodate her,” complains Gwen. “Well, I’ve sent plenty of money. Sis, you’re the one who lives with her,” screams Terrance over the TV. “I think it’s only fair that she stays with you,” states Gwen. The two adults continue to argue. Out of the back room comes their 80 years old mother, crying and in tears, “Take me to a nursing home!”

Introduction

How can you decide on the long-term care of your parents? How do you handle your brothers and sisters and maintain sanity? These questions are only one snapshot of what the future may hold for you. You can’t hide from these decisions. Trouble can find you anywhere. We are called the sandwich generation because we find ourselves simultaneously caring for our elderly parents and our children. Families are no longer in shouting distance from each other; our society has become a very mobile civilization without family and community support. There are countless stories of siblings arguing about who’s going to care for their parents, who’s in charge, and who’s going to pay for it.

Changing World

America continues to grow older as a civilization. Good health, improvements in medicine and technology are producing new social problems. The aging “Baby Boomer” generation, with its high income and education, will shatter stereotypes and set new cultural standards. According to the 1998 U.S. Census Report, the population is made up of about 12.7 percent seniors (65 years & older). One report found that in many developed countries in the West, older women are much more likely to live alone than are older men, partly because women are more likely to be widowed than men. This expanding senior sector will continue to be marked by diversity and unpredictability.

Hard Choices

Many families do not want to discuss long-term care with their parents. We try to push it away. However, as we watch our parents grow older each day, we find ourselves feeling uncomfortable. Long-term care is the biggest unfunded liability for many families. According to the 1997 Centers for Disease Control’s study, there were 1.5 million seniors living in nursing homes. Long-term care can involve a host of considerations. Options include community care, adult day care, home health care, assisted-living care, and life-care facilities to name a few. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Many don’t realize the financial strain aging can cause such as the cost of caring for chronic medical conditions. Can you afford not to think about it before it’s too late? You can, however, start to take actions.

Below are some suggestions:

• Talk with parents about their wishes.

• Encourage your parents to complete a will.

• Sell any property with relatives (parents, etc.)ASAP.

• Remember, property with siblings can be a horror story.

• Stay positive amidst negative family members.

• Discuss family finances openly.

• Discover your role in your parents’ care.

• Seek professional advice (legal, financial, etc.).

• Make a valuable contribution during this time.

Conclusion

Planning is important to ensuring that our parents will continue to live with dignity and fulfillment. How to handle long-term care of parents will continue to be a major issue in the future. People must decide how they will handle these problems. Some family members will continue to be selfish, putting most of the work on the overworked; caring for our elderly is a sacred tradition. Ask the hard questions. Make the important decisions. Gain your happiness back. Our parents deserve the best. Start today!

The Risks Of Lasik Surgery

The 21st century is the golden age for surgical procedures, among them an increasingly popular method of corrective eye surgery known as LASIK. LASIK is an acronym for the surgery, which stands for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. This procedure has become increasingly reliable, with unresolved complications reported in only 3 to 6 percent of patients. The risk of complications is still there, however, and can take several different forms.

The complications of LASIK surgery can include the following: Dry eyes, over or under correction, visual acuity fluctuation, halos or starbursts around light sources at night, light sensitivity, double vision, wrinkles in the flap, striation, decentered ablation, debris or growth under the flap, induced astigmatism. These complications are classified according to whether they arise in the preoperative procedures, the procedure itself, or after the operation either early on or later.

Each of the complications is unique unto itself, and it is important to remember that LASIK surgery is irreversible should nay of the complications occur. May of the complications such as halos and ghosts are not tested by standard eye tests, and need to be accounted for separately.

Over and under correction are the result of the surgeon incorrectly estimating the concentration that needs to be applied during the surgery. Many risks of LASIK surgery can also be increased by phenomena that may not have occurred to the patient, such as racial origin and environmental occurrences.

Improperly formed flaps can lead to an irregular surface and vision defects as the flap fails to properly adhere to the surface of the eye. This condition can be corrected with further surgery, although the costs will usually continue to accrue and sometimes a decrease in visual acuity. A flap that is too thick can also weaken the eye’s surface and result in bulging. Some patients have a condition that already makes them conducive to bulging, and thus are rejected as candidates for LASIK surgery.

As LASIK surgery become more an more commonplace, the risks and recovery times are becoming less common and pronounced. As with nay surgery, and especially those with cosmetic implications, LASIK is becoming increasingly popular. As people sense the money to be made in practicing the procedure, the risk of employing a surgeon who is not versed or experienced enough in the procedure also increases. Make sure to discuss LASIK surgery with your ophthalmologist before undergoing the procedure, to determine if you are eligible and also to suggest a list of surgeons who practice the procedure in your area. Make sure to contact other patients that have undergone the surgery by the particular surgeon you are thinking about employing in order to gain some first hand knowledge about her practice and success rate. Also look into where the surgeon was educated and if she served under another surgeon before going out to do the procedure on her own. There is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to surgical procedures, and treatment for your eyes are no exception.

“TAI CHI, not CHAI TEA!”

Those of you that have either completed a one-on-one program,
purchased an on-line program or have read anything else that I
have written in the past have most likely determined by now and
realize it is quite evident… I am a huge supporter and
advocate of integrated and phase-based training as optimized
methods of health and fitness technologies/systemologies. And it
wasn’t until I started researching Tai Chi as an alternative
form of exercise (I have been exercising for three-and-a-half
decades consistently) did I understand how such a slow-velocity
activity can help decrease blood pressure, reduce stress, help
develop a greater degree of coordination and diminish the number
of falls experienced by the elderly. The affects of resistance
and aerobic type activities and their impact on health is
unequivocal. Resistance training improves strength and the
development of lean muscle mass, as well as an increase in
bone-density and cardiovascular training improves the
efficiently of the heart, lungs and circulatory function while
decreasing mortality rates. However, over the past few decades,
Eastern practices such as Tai Chi and Yoga have complimented
mainstream fitness training programs by demonstrating comparable
health benefits to traditional fitness training. A closer look
at Tai Chi is warranted and yes this is coming from a fitness
coach who intrinsically knows and has meticulously practiced and
has been the recipient of the absolute benefits of weight
bearing exercise for over 30 years.

So… What is Tai Chi Anyway?

Tai Chi is pronounced as “Tie Chee.” Tai Chi can be translated
from Chinese to English as “moving life force.” Tai Chi is a
form of Martial Art that focuses on cultivating the flow of
energy in the body by performing a slow, gentle and precise
sequence of movements that channel potentially destructive
energy away from the body. As you could probably gleen, Tai Chi
requires a high level of concentration when performing a
sequence of moves, called Forms. Historically practiced as a
martial art, today Tai Chi is used as an alternative form of
exercise that requires a greater degree of movement than yoga
and eliminates the impact nature of many aerobic or
cardio-respiratory type activities.

Vitality: The Health and Well-Benefits of Tai Chi.

Talk about Synergy… The life force or energy in Tai Chi is
believed to be in the form of the Yin and the Yang. Yin and Yang
represent two opposite halves that come together to create a
unified whole. Tai Chi finds its roots in Taoist philosophy,
which adheres to the principle that optimum health is achieved
through a balanced Chi, or life force. Balance is maintained
through the use of focused, mindful breathing, precise execution
of movements and by keeping the muscles active but relaxed.
Imbalance can result in an array of health problems and a
decrease in the over-all quality of life. Tai Chi is a moderate
intensity exercise where aggregate energy expenditure is
comparable to walking at a pace of 3.5 mph. Overt health
benefits such as decreased stress, improved cardiovascular
fitness, balance, muscle strength, coordinative reflexes,
arthritis relief and flexibility in people of all ages have been
reported. The practice of Tai Chi has also been linked to a
reduction of falls and injury for the elderly, an important
attribute given that one in three adults 65 years or older fall
each year. Recent research also suggests Tai Chi to be an
effective program in the reduction of blood pressure and blood
lipid levels.

Integrating Tai Chi and Strength/Training.

Ahh…yes, a typical Tai Chi session can last five minutes to an
hour depending on the experience and fitness and primary
conditioning level of the participant. All sessions begin with a
few minutes of meditation to calm the mind as well as the body,
followed by a warm-up to increase blood-oxygen flow and body
temperature. The forms are completed very slowly and consist of
many sequential and continuous postural changes from the
beginning to the end of the workout session, including both
double stance and single stance weight-bearing maneuvers. The
forms can be performed in a quick controlled pace to raise the
heart rate and induce a greater aerobic intensity. Similarly,
muscular effort can be increased by emphasizing knee bends, arms
swings, twisting of the trunk and overall body recruitment when
carrying out and finishing the forms. While the movements may
look simple, proper execution of forms take months of practice.
Since Tai Chi creates a state of tranquility, calmness and
relaxation it is best to perform the activity on days off from
your regular workouts. Depending on how much time you want to
dedicate to exercise per week, you have a number of options to
consider when planning your session. For example, if you perform
an integrated circuit training or peak-intensive workout every
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, you can incorporate a Tai Chi
session on Tuesday and Saturday. Alternatively, you may complete
the circuit on Monday and Thursday, followed by a short
20-minute cardio session on both days, and practice Tai Chi on
Tuesday and Friday. It is absolutely up to you. Just remember…
Give yourself ample time for rest, recuperation and regeneration.

Traditions…

The ancient Taoists were renowned for their study of the arts of
health and longevity. The gentle movements of Taoist Tai Chi
convey the essence of this tradition to the modern world. In
over 25 countries around the globe, people are enjoying the many
benefits of practicing Taoist Tai Chi in friendly atmospheric
locales. Life is about balancing tasks while nourishing your
mind, body and spirit. Combined with a proper fitness training
program and nutrition, Tai Chi can provide the alternative form
of movement that you have been searching for. Using a
phase-based training approach, Tai Chi is a valuable form of
exercise to help relax your body and replenish your energy
stores from the intense fitness workouts you are accustomed to,
so good luck and may God bless each and everyone of you.

Cheating Wives -

Do wives cheat on their husbands? You better believe it and the
number that do is probably much higher than you might think.
Some studies suggest that the number of married women who have
an affair at some point could be as high as 60% but the average
seems to be around 35% and still climbing. While men often go
looking for an affair, for women affairs seem to ‘happen’,
usually during a period when their marriage or relationship is
under stress. A man goes looking for an affair for excitement
and the thrill factor while the typical woman falls into a
relationship because she is vulnerable and finds emotional
support that she may not be getting from her husband. Obviously
there are some women who do go looking for an affair simply for
the thrill factor but they are in the minority. That means that
it is possible to reduce the risk of your wife straying into the
arms of another guy so let’s look at some of the reasons women
wander and things you can do to prevent it. Quite a few guys
come to me after they have ended their marriage because they
have found that their wife was cheating and it seems that the
most common scenario is where the marriage has simply become too
comfortable. Everything seems fine, she doesn’t complain if you
spend all your time in front of the television and she doesn’t
give you a hard time when you go out with the boys. You mightn’t
be having sex all that often but no one is complaining and
everything is coasting along. While many women have no problems
there are a lot who feel that this sort of relationship
indicates that their husband has lost interest in them and they
no longer have their man’s emotional support. That emotional
support is so very important and a girl will go looking for it
if she isn’t getting it at home. To avoid this sort of problem
spend time with your partner, talk to her, encourage her to
share her day with you, be her friend and not just a guy with
whom she shares a house. Make her the most important person in
your life and make sure she understands that and finally have
sex when you’re awake, not just at the end of the day when it’s
just a quick fumble before you fall asleep. Sex is a very
important part of a relationship but some guys seem to make it
the focal point and that can be a serious mistake. Wild sex in
all its variations night after night does not keep your partner
from straying. Certainly she will enjoy it but a woman needs
something more than an incredible orgasm every 24 hours and even
wild sex will not keep her from wandering. If your partner is
suggesting to you that there are nights when she would just like
to snuggle up with you or spend the evening talking then you are
hearing some of the warning signs. As I said earlier, men often
look for affairs for the thrill and the passion while most women
fall into affairs because they are vulnerable. She may well feel
that the only reason you keep her cumming every night is because
you want to get your rocks off and not because you want to spend
time with her. A woman needs to be courted every single day, she
needs to be convinced that her partner loves and cares for her
and is attracted to her and that she means more to him than
being just a convenient sex object. Girls who don’t get this
sort of reassurance will find it elsewhere no matter how good
the sex may be. Some guys can’t cope when their wives go back to
college or return to the workforce. Suddenly they feel that
every predatory male will be sniffing around their lady and they
feel that their relationship is in danger. The ironic thing here
is that this is probably the least dangerous time in a
relationship. The bored wife at home is far more likely to stray
than the eager girl who is far more interested in establishing a
career than falling into an affair. The problem here is that
guys in this situation often behave like jealous idiots and do
far more damage to their relationships than they realize. It is
far better to talk to your partner about your concerns than to
hide them and let them fester until they explode and ruin
everything. By talking calmly and quietly to your partner about
your concerns you show her that you really care about her and
believe me, you will help her see how you really feel about her
and you will win more brownie points than you ever thought
possible.
