What to Sell on eBay - 7 REAL Tips for Finding Successful Products

This question has become one for the ages. There are many answers to it, few of which will actually help you. Today we will give you 7 tips you must keep in mind when you search for items to sell on eBay.

The problem with asking the question “What can I sell on eBay” is that you’re likely to get one of a small group of boilerplate answers. These answers get repackaged and dispensed as brand new answers, however they are still the same, reworked, difficult advice.

The most common answers you will find are:

  • Look for items at garage sales, flea markets and estate sales.
  • Speak to manufacturing corporations and ask them if you can sell their products on ebay for them.
  • Buy from wholesalers.
  • Buy cheap items from retail stores.
  • Negotiate with stores to sell their overstocked items.

The problem with all of these things is they just don’t work, they are too complicated, or they are just overdone.

How to Settle on a Product

There are 7 necessary tips to keep in mind when searching for a product that will sell well. To find the best product it must meet a number of guidelines.

  1. Keep it small. Larger items bring with them a host of issues, from storage to shipping and everything in between. Unless storage is not a problem for you, keeping more than a few large items around can cramp up your extra rooms, basement and garage. The problem is that you need to be able to keep a large supply of items that you’re selling to make any real money. Making $100 on a sofa is great, but it hardly pays the bills. If you have any ideas about quitting your job or supplementing your income, you will need to be selling a lot more of these. Heck, 3 or 4 sofas in a room should fill it up. So where are you going to put 10 of them? Keep your items small, and you can use shelves, drawers and closets for storage.
  2. Can it ship easily? I know we covered the size issue in the previous paragraph, but it comes up again here. Even if you find the perfect product, you must be able to ship it easily and cheaply. You may find a great deal on rocking chairs, but how are you going to get a box around them? Not to mention, the shipping costs on large, heavy and bulky items can be in the hundreds of dollars. Look for products that can ship for a minimum amount of money. Anything from toothpicks to books fit the bill nicely.
  3. Find a niche! If you try to sell everything to everyone, you will end up selling nothing to anyone. The more specialized you become, the better your chances of being able to offer unique items. For example, there are thousands of people on eBay selling DVD’s. Prices have been cut down to nothing, and profits along with them. The only way to make money as a DVD seller on eBay is to be one of the few sellers who have huge volumes. Starting out that way is very tough indeed. On the other hand, if you sell a specific type of DVD, like old horror movies or cartoon sets, you will likely have better profit margins. The large DVD warehouses just can’t move enough of them to make it worth their while. Come up with a few niches, and you should do pretty well.
  4. Beware of seasonal items. Christmas decorations may sell well from October until December, but no one will be buying them in April. If you will be selling seasonal items, make sure you know when their season ends, and don’t get stuck with a lot of leftover products.
  5. Fads can be great money-makers for short periods of time, but after that, good luck getting rid of them. Think of Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo and Cabbage Patch Kids. All of these fads enjoyed phenomenal sales due to their intense popularity. After the boom, however, sales (and prices) dropped immediately. Ride the waves of popular items, but beware of their life-cycle. Prepare for the end of the fad, even as you are beginning the selling.
  6. Bring something unique to the marketplace. This seems difficult - and it can be. If you have access to something unique, such as a specialized book, health product or computer program that other sellers don’t have license for, your products will be in demand. This tip is worth putting some time into. Think of ways to obtain such products, or modify existing ones (But be sure of your rights to do so!).
  7. Sell what is in demand. Coins, stamps and other collectibles are always in demand. They are easy to buy and easy to sell and ship. If you spend time researching the ones that sell the best, for the most profit, you can do very well in this area. Try to come up with unique ways of presenting these items as well.

Hopefully these tips will get you started. Always keep in mind that uniqueness seems to be the key to eBay success. Even if you’re selling existing and plentiful items, come up with a unique way of selling or packaging them, and you may just find the next winner.

Good luck, and happy selling!

Ebay Stores Feature a Huge Variety of Office Furniture at Competitive Prices

For a long time, eBay has been the leader in the online race for the lowest prices and largest selection of retail items sold daily. When searching for almost any product online, you are sure to run into an eBay listing from a search engine and office chairs and furniture are no exception. With items available for only a fraction of the original retail price, it is easy to find office furniture for less than the average retail office store.

When entering office furniture into the eBay stores search engine, I was able to pull up 216 different eBay Stores featuring office chairs. There was 1304 different office chair listings in the office furniture category and some stores had hundreds of chairs and products. When viewing these listings, you would find that approximately 80 percent of this furniture is brand new with prices well below retail. A few of these eBay stores also specialize in used and reconditioned furniture clearance for the real bargain shopping experience.

When shopping eBay Stores, make sure that you thoroughly read each listing and check the feedback ratings and store policies of the seller before purchasing. Most eBay Store sellers with a large number of listings are Powersellers with positive feedback and a high number on their feedback score. You can be confident in knowing that you are buying from a reputable store.

Ebay Stores can save a business or the average home office worker a lot of time and money when shopping and purchasing office chairs and furniture. Every consumer would like to receive the best price on the product they are searching for, knowing that they have different options allows for more intelligent buying. Before purchasing any office chairs or furniture for your business, make sure that you have checked eBay Stores to make sure you get the lowest price possible.

Buying Used Dell Laptops, PC’s and Servers on eBay - How to be successful

Two years ago I needed a way to refresh more PC’s and Laptops at my company without spending more. New Dell laptops were great but expensive and over the years we had accumulated many Latitude C series parts. The C series ran from the CPX C600 C610 C400 and C640 models before their new D line of Latitude laptops were released. The docks, drives and many other parts are usable in any of these models so we decided to take advantage of this and purchase used Dell laptops. eBay was where we sourced these. Over the years I’ve learned some valuable things about buying these expensive items. Here are some tips and some recommendations of sellers I’ve found to be very reliable.

Know what you are buying.

Don’t just go by the model and specs of the machine. I’m seeing two types of units out there. Those that are complete PC’s sold as used units. Also refurbished units that have no serial number on the bottom or in the bios. These units can be had at very good prices and so far I’ve found them all to be in great condition. The problem is that without the serial you can’t even get tech support from Dell and obviously there isn’t a warranty. If you don’t mind this from the right seller these are great. For my use at my company it just isn’t worth the appearance of a model with no serial number. I’m passing on these for now.

Always pay using Pay Pal or some other service that lets you use a credit card.

Even when you use a credit card on Paypal your covered by the dispute and charge back protection provided by your credit card company. I’ve had two instances where the seller did not ship my laptop and I had to dispute the charge with my credit card company. In both cases I received a credit back from my company and had no trouble from Paypal. Before disputing open a formal case with Paypal as they require that before you do a charge back. I’m not sure what the consequences would be but better to appear as if you are trying to use their system.

Buying regularly? Try to form a relationship with a couple reputable sellers.

After doing business with a handful of sellers I trust I now completely bypass eBay. The sellers love the money they save on fees and I can often have them hunt down mint condition Latitude laptops. Some will even customize the laptop to your specs.

Check the sellers feedback.

Look to see that the seller regularly sells Dell equipment. This tells you two things. One that they are a reputable seller and have a history of people who bought the exact same item and were happy. The other thing is that if you see positive feedback regarding non-similar equipment you can assume that they will have no spare parts or service ability. If you see many sales of similar Dell equipment you can be sure that if you have a problem and notify them right away they will probably be able to fix your laptop.

Ask about warranty or warranty transfer assistance.

If you are lucky the unit you purchase will come with some warranty left from Dell. However Dell will not transfer the warranty into your name unless you have the original owners name and address. If you can find a seller willing to provide this you just struck gold! Note, this is not common at all. You can still get Dell to service an in warranty unit but they won’t transfer the ownership to your name.

Buying Servers? Look for Dell refurbished units with a warranty.

I don’t know how it works but there are many resellers of Dell Servers that are new or refurbished from Dell. These come with the Dell warranty and are transferable. When the server arrives its in the original Dell box still sealed up. The price can’t be beat and I’ve never had a problem. My suspicion is that for those with the right connections, Dell will sell you volumes of over production and refurbished units far below pricing you’d see in their Dell Outlet site. http://www.scsistuff.com is a great vendor for this type of buy.

Avoiding Buyer Complaints on eBay Is Easy

Once you’ve sold a product on eBay and shipped it, the last thing you need is for the buyer to contact you to complain. If this happens you now have to spend extra time exchanging emails and trying to please them so they don’t leave negative feedback or insist on a refund.

Follow the points below and you will protect yourself against complaints and potentially messy refund/return situations.

(1) Be completely honest in your description

This is the most important defence against complaints. If you have listed every possible problem, glitch or blemish on your product in the description in clear terms, the buyer will not have much reason to complain.

Also, if they complain to eBay, you can simply point eBay to the description and they will see you pointed out the problem.

If you are selling a DVD and it has slight scratches on the disk, say so.

If you are selling a porceline doll and it has a hairline fracture on the bottom, inform potential bidders in the description.

Hiding problems with your item will results in problems. There is no point selling an item, packaging it carefully and shipping it to the buyer quickly only for them to return it within days for a refund. You’ve wasted their time, your own time and your own money sending it to them.

A simple sentence in the description will avoid problems and can be a reference point to alert any complaining buyers to.

For example:

I recently listed an 8 VHS video set on eBay but tape 5 was almost unwatchable. To cover myself I simply added the following to the description:

“PLEASE NOTE: Tape 5 of this set is not in very good condition, it was shipped in this way and a replacement could not be sought. Most of the tape has bad audio and it is hard to pick up what [the presenter] is saying although the picture is fine. All of the other 7 videos are in excellent condition. Please do not bid if this is a problem.”

If the buyer complains now, I can point him back to this text in the listing (which, by the way, was written in red text so it stood out!)

(2) Make it clear where you can ship to

If you are selling in the UK and do not want to ship abroad, make it perfectly clear that you only ship to the UK.

i.e. put in the description “UK bidders only please. Sorry but I cannot ship this item outside the UK”

Also, eBay allows you to state in the options where you ship to. Make sure you choose the “United Kingdom Only” option.

(3) Justify the postage costs and make sure they are stated

Nothing annoys a buyer more than winning an item and then being charged what they see as too much for postage.

eBay’s stand on postage is that you can charge a reasonable fee which covers the postage and packing charge as well as any “handling fee”.

The problem with this is that a buyer will not be happy to have an extra £5 or so “handling fee” added on to compensate for your troubles. Any normal eBay buyer wants to pay the exact postage cost and no more. If the parcel turns up with a £4 stamp printed on it and they paid £10 they will not be happy.

State and justify your exact postage costs. If you don’t clearly tell potential bidders how much postage and packing is, don’t be surprised if they neglect to bid on your item.

(4) Let bidders know how long it will take to post the item

Another problem with eBay and the world today is that everyone is in a rush. People expect goods to arrive next day.

Complaints can be lowered (and feedback improved) if you let the buyers know, in the description, when you are likely to post the item and how long it will take to arrive at the buyer’s location.

e.g. “After payment I will despatch as soon as possible, usually the next working day so you should take possession of the package within 48 hours.”

(5) Don’t shill bid or use underhand tactics

Shill bidding is using someone else’s account to ramp up the price of your own auction. It is relatively easy to detect if you are shill bidding and it usually results in negative feedback and suspension/banning from eBay. Don’t trick your buyers, it isn’t worth it.

(6) Respond to buyer questions quickly and politely

If a buyer asks you a question after the auction ends, respond quickly and be polite. When using email it is hard to convey emotions and a quick response may seem rude or “stand off-ish”. Remember your manners and add a quick line to your replies such as:

“Thanks for your question, please do not hesitate to contact me with any further queries”.

(7) Act professionally at all times

Some people like to complain. Before firing off a reply email, write it but do not send it.

Wait a few hours until you have calmed down and write a polite response asking the buyer what you can do to help or resolve the situation.

You may be forced to offer a refund and in this case, it may be easier to simply refund the money and relist the item rather than argue.

If you are forced to leave negative feedback, try to wait until 90 days following the sale before you submit the feedback. This will leave the other party with less than 24 hours to respond. This is due to the fact that eBay does not allow anyone to leave feedback once 90 days has lapsed.

How to Find and Buy Digital Items on eBay?

Digital items are special files or information that you can access online. For example it can be a software package that you can install on to your system after paying it at eBay. All these items are sold on eBay at a ‘buy it now” price, that is, you are not required to bid on that item, you can instantly place an order.

Digital items can be found by browsing on eBay’s category listing or searching by keywords. While going through the lists of items you may find a “digital item” filter on the left hand side of the page. You may not find such filters on all pages. If you click the “yes” button on this filter, you will see only digital items. The best keyword to search for digital items is to type ‘digital item’. Then select the option ‘search title and description’. Digital item sellers use these words in their description.

It is not difficult to view and differentiate a digital item since eBay flashes a standard message “This is a digital item” at the top of the item description. Review the listing properly to see if the item is of real interest to you and is easy to install. For this check “file type and requirements” portion to see if this item is compatible with your computer system and software. Now that you have decided finally to buy this digital item, click the link ‘buy it now’. Since you can instantly place order and can download, you need to pay the seller immediately too. For this you can use “PayPal” which will help you to pay quickly and safely online using your credit card or bank account number. After receiving the payment the seller will instruct you either to visit a website and download the file, or will send the item to you on your preferred email.

Strange Goings On Over At EBay

What makes people list some very weird and outrageous items on Ebay?

Is it their ego that drives them? To think that thousands of people will read and maybe even bid on their ridiculous offerings – is that it?

What sort of offerings can be categorised as ‘strange’ you might ask?

Well, this author has seen auctions for: virginity (this was removed because let’s face it – that’s prostitution and definitely not something that Ebay really want to promote!), a hilarious auction for a stick – yes a stick! The offending stick was part of a chair which broke when the seller sat on it! He was so outraged that he decided it would be a saleable item. And starting at .01c, he was right! He actually did sell it for close to $1.00 …

Now that doesn’t mean you should all rush out to your local forest and collect firewood and give each piece an interesting history about which to write and offer up on Ebay!

Also seen was a piece of toast! This was so ridiculous, that one TV station in Australia featured that piece of toast on an evening comedy program and the hit counter went berserk after that!
So it seems that anything, which could be classified as ‘strange’, has a place on Ebay.

Anyone got any old false teeth perhaps? I’m sure even those would get a bid! Or how about that most horrible ‘thing’ you bought on Ebay, which could be classified as the worst, buying choice you ever made?

I’ve got one of those – what self-respecting Ebay supporter hasn’t?

Thinking it might be fun to buy a wig after having my long hair cut short, I turned to – you guessed it – Ebay - to spend my cash on a wig. Boy oh boy, what a disaster that turned out to be! I purchased this gorgeous looking blonde, long haired, curly looking piece which promised to make me look sexy and turn heads! The only heads this disaster would have turned would have been in true ‘Exorcist’ style!

This ‘thing’ which was advertised as “New, with Tags” was an absolutely revolting disaster! It was made of what can only be described as raffia, was orange in colour and was ‘glued’ in bits to the mesh which fits ‘all sizes of head’ – all but mine, that is!

Too small, too horrible, too funny for words! It now sits on the corner piece of our banister – I keep thinking I’ll paint some eyes and a big red mouth there. It certainly has been a talking point with lots of laughs and wise cracks at ‘mum’s worst Ebay purchase’! It almost seems a shame to sell it now in the ‘weird’ category because ‘Sally’ seems to now have a home here!

Ebay – not just a place to buy and sell – a place to find outrageously funny odds and sods to keep readers of all ages amused!

Top 10 Reasons Why eBay Auctions Fail

Are you finding that auction after auction fails to attract any bidders or buyers? It happens to the best of us sometimes. Take a good look at these top ten reasons to see if any of them could be making your bidders avoid you.

1. The starting price was too high.

People don’t want to bid high before anyone else has. Always start your auctions low and let the bidders bid them up.

2. The fixed price is too high.

If you’re just selling with Buy it Now, then of course your items won’t sell if they’re too expensive. Try reducing the price a little each time the item fails to sell.

3. No picture.

Most buyers are reluctant to bid on something without a picture and that goes even more for high-value items. Think of it from the buyer’s point-of-view… Would you want to bid on an item when you’ve no idea what it even looks like?

4. You had a reserve.

Reserve prices just aren’t good for business. It scares away buyers like you wouldn’t believe, and it costs you a percentage of your final sale price. Avoid them like the plague.

5. Bad spelling and grammar.

If your titles are spelled incorrectly, then no one can actually find your auctions. If your descriptions are incoherent, no one will know what you’re talking about. Always run your text through a spelling and grammar checker before you put it up on eBay.

6. Too much for shipping.

You might be expecting people to pay more for shipping than they’re willing to. Give them a few cheaper options that will take longer or use cheaper materials.

7. Negative feedback.

If you got negative feedback on your last transaction, expect things to be slow for a while. Try selling cheap things for a while to get your account back in good standing.

8. Nasty terms.

Don’t write things all over your auction like “I will only accept returns in PERFECT condition” or “Serious bidders only, no timewasters!!” This is entirely unnecessary and just makes you look difficult to deal with.

9. No PayPal

Many buyers simply avoid any seller who doesn’t accept PayPal as a payment method. They can’t be bothered with the hassle of anything else. Even if you don’t like PayPal, you should accept it if you want to do business on eBay.

10. The items were bad.

You will have to accept that there are some items that nobody wants. Perhaps they were once popular but then people had found out that they’re useless and stopped buying them. Before you come to this conclusion, though, check everything else you can including if anyone else is managing to sell it. If you’re sure it’s something people don’t want anymore, try to return the items and buy some new stock.

eBay Shipping Basics - 10 Tips to Get Started Right

1) Always Pack the Item Properly
The biggest mistake you can make when shipping an item is to go lighty on the packaging and send an unportected item. Buyers will instantly leave negative feedback if the item arrives damaged due to bad padding. Make sure you look into the proper packaging for the item you are shipping - a book is different then a china doll, and both require proper materials.

2) Never Pay For Packing Materials
Right behind improper packing is over paying for shipping materials. There are far too many sources of free boxes and free padding to need to buy them. I have been a powerseller on ebay for 4 years and not once have I paid for packing materials. EBay and USPS offer free boxes, UPS offers free shipping labels. Local retailers will generaly have old boxes lying around also - this is perfect for those large items.

3) Ship Promptly After the Auction Closes
So you’ve just spent $400 on the newest game console - purchased it from an eBay Seller. Do you want to wait a week just for the seller to ship the item? Neither do your customers. Always ship the item as soon as possible after the ebay auction is closed.

4) Box the Product Before the eBay Aucton is Over
It is a good habit to get into packaging your items before the auction is finished. This makes it exceedingly easy to ship within a day of the buyer paying. Shipping quickly will grab good feedback more than anythign else.

5) Use UPS Ground Shipping for Large Items
It is generally the best to use UPS ground for anything that weighs more than 10lbs. It is very inexpensive to ship large items with UPS. Though slower than USPS, it is far more cost effective on larger frieght.

6) Use USPS Priority Mail for Sending Small Items
Anything less than 10lbs is best shipped with priority mail. Priority mail is very fast, and very inexpensive for small things. Shipping with priority mail is also very good for your buyer, as it will get them their item quickly and effectively.

7) USPS Media mail is Best for Shipping Media Items
If you are shipping a book, cd, dvd, or any other item that fits in the media catagory - it is probably best to ship with media mail. This is a very cheap service, and is great for the items it is meant for. If your item is expensive, however, it may be better to use priority mail to please your buyer.

8) Include a Thank You Note in Each Package
This is one of the most overlooked methods of creating return customers. You need to ship the package anyhow, why not attempt to get another eBay purchase out of each customer? Almost all of the big players on eBay use this tactic.

9) Use Paypal to Print Shipping Labels
Printing eBay shipping labels from Paypal is one of the easiest and most time saving features availible to new sellers. Larger eBay sellers might want to look into furthor ebay shiping automation, but for everything under 50 packages per week - electronic labels from Paypal are the way to go.

10) eBay Shipping Takes Getting Used To - Don’t Quit
Not everyone gets into a rythm immediatly. Shipping on eBay can be a trying task - but keep going and you’ll soon be rewarded with happy customers and efficient practices. It is important to learn and rethink and establish you’re own personal best practices. With time, anyone can ship like a PowerSeller.

Mason Hipp is a long time eBay PowerSeller and has commited much of his time to teaching others about selling on eBay. He has mentored many students to full time work on eBay. To learn more about shipping on eBay click the following link: http://www.selladeal.com/guides/shipping/
