Preparing for a Hurricane

In Florida, we know hurricanes. We know what they can do and we
know how to prepare for them. We watched in horror as our
brothers and sisters in the Gulf States were displaced and
damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in what is undoubtedly
the worst hurricane season on record for that region. We
wondered why it seemed to be so difficult for them to evacuate
and get to safety. When a hurricane threatens South Florida our
evacuation plans go into effect almost automatically.
Systematically we evacuate the entire Florida Keys on a single
road. Our keys population is nowhere near the population of New
Orleans or Houston and we do not have a network of
super-highways to evacuate them, only a single road moving north
to Miami before our highways become a factor.

So why do our evacuations work? Simple! We have a plan. A plan
developed and implemented by Local and State authorities, not
the Federal Government or its agencies. After all, we choose to
live here, so it is our responsibility to manage our needs under
any condition. We do look for help from the Federal Government
after the storm in rebuilding under-insured areas, to help
restore roads and utilities and provide low interest loans for
affected businesses. This kind of help takes weeks and months to
reach all affected people. And it only comes when States and
Local governments make the request. And to make those requests
the Federal system expects that the State and Local governments
provide a viable plan to make sure that mistakes are not
repeated and that Federal Aid is not just a temporary fix.

Preparing a hurricane plan for an individual or an entire region
requires information from many sources and many experts. A great
place to start to gather information and sources is the
Hurricane Tracking page from www.ServicesInFlorida.com. Here you
will also find links to individuals and organizations that can
help you with your plan.

hurricane Andrew, 1992.

Find An Enemy

To consolidate and increase failing political power, the first step is to find an enemy. Demonize this enemy in every way possible. Label it unpatriotic to question the evil of this enemy. Then rally around the flag and kick some serious butt.

Sound familiar? It certainly should!
Subsequent to the horrors of 9/11, those very tactics took a president with a 49% approval rating – the danger point for any smart politician with an eye on history – and launched him to the highest approval ratings of any president in American history. It enabled the passage of the abomination called the PATRIOT Act (quickie review here: “Label it unpatriotic to question . . .”) which gutted our Constitution and ended our way of life forever. It brought the average American on the street (who is a fundamentally decent human being) to support the bombing of a barren and helpless 10th century country right into submission in order to punish the sins of a few evil fanatics.

And, of course, those tactics also made the old dream of an Afghan natural gas pipeline a reality.

Dubya may be pushing the limits with his planned attack on Iraq. He is running out of time – and approval. Nevertheless, those tactics bought him the best eleven months of any president in history. If he failed to use them wisely, that does not diminish the usefulness of the overall plan.
But Dubya didn’t invent the tactics he used to such good advantage.

Dubya’s daddy used them with enormous success in the Gulf War. Do you remember all the stories about Saddam’s troops snatching babies from incubators and throwing them on the hospital floors in Kuwait City? It seems now that they were completely fabricated. It simply never happened, but it gained an awful lot of popularity for a war that never had a thing to do with us! It also gained a lot of popularity for a president who looked America in the eye, said, “Read my lips.” – and lied.

Dubya learned well from his daddy.
Adolf Hitler used similar manipulative tactics very successfully in the years leading up to World War II. He demonized Jews, Gypsies – everyone who had committed the hideous sin of being born other than “Aryan” – which handily distracted German citizens from the horror of their economy at the time, and then he invaded Poland and started some serious whupass. Despite the determination of most of the world to stop him, his own people worshipped him almost as a god right up until the bitter end.

Subsequent to Pearl Harbor (and some believe prior to Pearl Harbor), Roosevelt used similar tactics with great success in the early days of our entry into World War II. They continued to carry popular support right into the last days of the war, when Truman made the decision to use the bomb.

The earliest description of tactics such as these that I have personally read can be found in the writings of Julius Caesar, but I am sure that even earlier soldiers and thinkers used them to control the unruly masses and get an unpopular job done.

Why did these leaders resort to these tactics? They used them quite simply because they work. I should also mention that they also work especially well for leaders who are losing support – or who never had much support in the first place.

Are you taking notes? Good. Because tactics of this type don’t just apply to nations. They work for any identifiable group that is opposed to any other identifiable group.

Another quick review here. What are the elements? (1) Failing popularity or support for your group, (2) find an enemy group, (3) demonize that enemy, and (4) kick some you-know-what. Result? Fantastic popularity, loyalty, support, ad nauseam.

This morning, I had the misfortune to read an ad for the August issue of Whistleblower magazine with some excerpts from the theme – how Paganism is destroying America by fostering the “New World Order.” Normally, when I read material as ridiculously false as this, I just wonder about the intelligence and/or the education of the author.

Today was different.

Right now, I am especially sensitive to the use of manipulation of public opinion in this manner to gain power and money. So what might have gone unnoticed by me yesterday rose up and smacked me in the face today.

I do not ascribe this sort of nonsense to sincere Christians. Sincere Christians are not insecure in their faith. They have no need to play games with manipulation.

No, the authors of these stories – and others like them – are not sincere Christians. They are opportunists, cold-bloodedly seeking power and money by methods historically proven to work. In addition, their blatantly money-grubbing so-called “churches” are losing popularity at a surprising rate. Which happens to constitute Element 1.
Paganism is the fastest growing religion in western civilization, despite our adamant refusal to proselytize, so the authors have found their enemy ready to hand. Element 2 is complete.

Element 3 is to demonize the enemy. That’s pretty easy. The Roman Catholics started that some centuries ago with the lie that Pagans are Satanists. Since Pagans do not believe in the Judeo-Christian pantheon at all, belief in Satan – let alone worship of Satan – is a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless, that ghastly lie resulted in literally millions of deaths at the hands of the Inquisition, and is still believed by many ignorant people today.

Interestingly enough, Pope John Paul, himself a sincere Christian, has only a few months ago formally admitted his Church’s responsibility and made public apology for those very deaths, among many others.

So now the opportunists are taking a slightly different tack.

It seems (now) that the earth-based religions are destroying America by promoting environmentalism and the U.N.’s “New World Order.”

Really. Uh, huh. This lie flies because very few non-Pagans known anything about us, and they believe without question what their religious leaders tell them.

Oh, sure, Pagans have some brain dead nutcases that get some lurid press now and then by sitting in Lotus position under trees, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that some of these twits have a mutual love affair with the United Nations. Christians have their share of nuts, too, in case you hadn’t noticed. I don’t think any religious faith is devoid of silly fanatics.

In fairness, It is certainly true that most Pagans are environmentalists. As a group, we revere the Earth which gave us life, and there are few of us who are not concerned about things like destroying the rain forests of Brazil (which produce more than 70 percent of the world’s oxygen, by the way). Breathing – and eating – are very difficult habits to break.

On the other hand, most Pagans also have the pragmatic view that Man is very much a part of Earth’s environment, and I have yet to meet any Pagans nutty enough to advocate the destruction of Man’s habitat to benefit some nearly extinct snail garter! Nor would most Pagans object to further development of our world’s energy resources – while searching for a renewable source of energy, of course. I, for one, prefer an automobile to my feet, as my ample fundament will attest.

Since we don’t cling to the ridiculous belief that Man’s history is barely 6,000 years long, we have a more encompassing view of geological history, recognizing that “global warming” is a part of a cyclical climate pendulum that has been swinging back and forth for many hundreds of thousands of years, and is certainly not a result of Man’s rise to civilization – which, if you think about it, is a singularly arrogant view of the problem.

Now we come down to the United Nations. I have never imagined a more sinister threat to the country that I love or to my personal freedom than I see in the very existence of the United Nations, let alone the very idea of a “New World Order.” I have publicly stated on many occasions that I would dearly love to nail an eviction notice addressed to that evil organization to their Manhattan front door personally.

Just to set the public record straight, I have been a practicing Witch (Pagan/Wiccan) for thirty years. I am a Libertarian activist, and a firearms instructor. I am the Texas Director for Armed Females of America, and I carry a firearm 24 hours a day, so the global disarmament plans of the United Nations constitute complete and absolute anathema to me.

If – if – I agreed with those plans, which are an integral part of the “New World Order” as originally coined publicly by George Herbert Walker Bush, I would be no threat to anyone at all. I would be just another sad and pathetic victim suffering under the yoke of a global income tax.

Please allow me to point out that my very favorite targets for practice shooting are mock United Nations helmets – and I am very sure that real ones – especially occupied – would be even better.

Support the “New World Order?” Don’t make me laugh!

My dearest dream is a return to the literal interpretation of our great nation’s Constitution, most especially her Bill of Rights, followed by the immediate and forceful eviction of the United Nations from U.S. soil. Hell, don’t even bother to give ‘em a boat! Let them swim all the way back to socialist Europe, where they damned well belong.

The First Amendment of that Constitution guarantees my religious freedom – and that of Christians, too, in case you had forgotten.

The Second Amendment guarantees enforcement of the First Amendment. I would strongly advise against any attempt at moving past the Element 3 practice of demonizing Pagans to the fourth element – or “whupass” – stage.

A rapidly growing population of individualist, Libertarian, anti-U.N. and extremely well-armed Pagans are just liable to turn the tables on you.

Beware of Abusive Authority

John 20:23
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

This article is written to reach the mind and hearts of church leaders (Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers), but it is also relevant for all members in the body of Christ.

As the body of Christ begins to walk in greater authority, greater anointing and greater power, it must not forget that love and forgiveness are essential for sustained favor and blessings. It is very easy to get caught up in the advancement of the kingdom of God, its signs and wonders, its accurate and timely prophetic words and utterances. But being focused on these wonderful things can sometimes blind us of the fundamentals of Christianity - love and forgiveness. Walking in love and forgiveness are the key elements to the anointing, favor, wisdom and blessings of God.

Church leaders can become calloused and hard when being taken to higher levels in the things of the kingdom of God. Aggravation and frustration that church leaders may have for members in the body can be a hindrance to the anointing. An unforgiving heart and anger can not only place a yoke of bondage on church leaders themselves, but also on those that the anger and unforgiveness is geared for.

Proverbs 18:21
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

It is the power of our words that have the ability to lift up, or cast down. Church leadership must always keep in mind that their main objective is to lift up those that have been weighed down. Constant beating and bashing of church members is not productive for Christian maturity. Of course, chastisement comes through the Word of God. But involving the human emotions to the point where jealousy and unforgiveness may be generated is not excusable. Church leaders most know that their words carry more weight than the words of anyone else because they hold an office of authority. Aggravation, anger and unforgiveness from the roles of authority in the church can indeed place a curse on those in which the lashing out is for, as well as cut off the blessings that were in store for the church leaders.

There are nine evident affects of this type of church abuse:

1) Individuals find it difficult to receive impartation - These individuals find it hard to hear from God and advance in the things of God. Harsh words can paralyze individuals to the point where their emotion and longing for God is shattered and they become couch potatoes in churches and no longer have the desire to grow.

2) Outsider feeling - Church abuse can make an individual feel like he or she is not part of the body of Christ and that he or she is all alone.

3) Feared loss of salvation - Church abuse can make an individual question whether or not they are saved. He or she may feel that if the leaders of the church are constantly reprimanding them, then there must be something wrong with them, creating a sense of condemnation.

4) Gifted person operating in deception - A gifted person is the most dangerous person if they are operating without the heart of God (operating with love, compassion and forgiveness). Witchcraft begins to work in the circle of intercessors, giving them controlling spirits, spirits of jealousy, envy, greed and pride.

5) Evil soul ties with a former church - Constant bickering and complaining about a former church or its leadership is the end result of an unhealthy relationship between church leadership and its flock. The bickering and complaining turns into curses in the spirit realm, which conjure up a spirit of unforgiveness, which blocks the flow of blessings into that individual’s life.

6) Back-sliding spirit - Church abuse is evident when church leadership hates other churches and tells their members that if they leave, they are headed straight to hell. It is amazing how many individuals are held in bondage by such nonsense. Unfortunately, this continues to go on in churches because of a serious lack of understanding of the Word of God. So in essence, a person that is held under this type of bondage begins to feel that if going to hell is the end result of joining another church, then he or she might as well have a good time by diving back into the lusts of the world. Again, this is evidence of witchcraft and mind-control.

7) Hard time making decisions in personal life - A person who is the subject of church abuse will find it difficult to make his or her own decisions because they have become accustomed to the church making decisions for them. The church begins to make the decisions instead of decisions being aided by the Spirit of God. This is yet another instance of witchcraft.

8) Wandering spirit - Church abuse may cause an individual who has left the church to be uncomfortable with any churches they may visit or may be led to join. The thoughts of past church abuses can keep on popping up in the mind of an individual, making them hesitant to submit to another church leadership.

9) Loss of spiritual or natural identity - Church abuse erases an individual’s identity and places its own stamp on them. This is nothing more than modern day communism - the act of erasing personal traits and characteristics in order to masquerade them with the image of the church leaders. Once again, this is witchcraft.

Do not fall victim of church abuse. More importantly, do not find yourself in a church office or role of authority, perverting your authority and abusing the members. Church abuse is a common phenomenon and can only be discerned spiritually. Use wisdom when approaching church leaders if you sense church abuse. Always be in a place of prayer and seeking God for the divine appointed time. Always pray for church leadership also.

Church leaders, remain humble and broken on the Rock, who is Christ Jesus. Staying in a place of love and forgiveness will not allow the ugly head of church abuse to appear.

Where is our largest technological plan?

Publishing Guidelines: You may publish my article in your
newsletter, on your website or in your print publication
provided you include the resource box at the end. Notification
would be appreciated but is not required.

Where is our largest technological plan?

By J.C.Melo The period, more or less one year before September
11. The White House Technology Advisor worked in the mankind
largest plan until now, to install a fantastic communications
and IT network of 100 Mb/s in 100 million houses in the next 10
years. A plan bigger than the Kennedy’s plan to place a man in
the Moon in 10 years.

The plan was being developed with a lot of priorities, 470
companies had already petitioned to participate and/or to
invest, they discussed the more suitable communications protocol
among the existent ones - as the H.323 - and the new ones, etc.
The forecast was to announce it until the end of 2002.

That plan had very big goals, among which I can remember:

01. e-Surgery 02. e-Physician 03. e-Education (all levels) 04.
e-Training (for companies) 05. e-Business (B2B, B2C, C2B, and by
voice) 06. Iterative TV 07. e-Movies 08. e-Security (Federal,
State, Country, homes) 09. e-Elections 10. TV telephony 11.
e-Police 12. e-Government (all between the government and the
Citizens) 13. e-Theater 14. e-Conferences 15. e-Libraries 16.
e-Sciences 17. e-Polls 18. e-Management 19. TeleCommuter (home
work) 20. All IT processing and storage through distant data
centers 21. An estimated 1,000,000 new companies

and more e-Xs that you can imagine.

In every moment that I thought of this plan, I lamented two
things: first, to be 73-years old and probably cannot
accompanies him in the next 30 years, and second, the dozens of
technological ideas that I could suggest.

And then the September 11 happened, the main national priority
moved to security matters, the investments - government and
privates - moved to another directions and the people worried
more about the moment than with the future.

But in order to survive, without the smallest doubt we need this
technological plan in order to maintain the world technological
hegemony of the United States in the next 30-40 years and as a
result, our world economic hegemony. And as you realize, I am
talking about our children and grandsons future.

Now we are choosing a new President but any that comes to be the
chosen, again that plan must have a very high priority, and for
its greatness and for its long duration naturally he doesn’t
depend on a specific Party or a specific government.

Now we have a lot of communication products and services -
mobiles and its thousand of applications, digital TV, etc - and
a lot of IT applications and services - CRM Customer
Relationship Management with sophisticated voice and
bidirectional Call Centers, ERP Enterprise Resources Planning,
Voice over IP Voip, BI Business Intelligence, Data Mining, AI
Artificial Intelligence, GSI, the wide Internet and its thousand
of applications, etc - but all those are small embryos of what
is possible to do.

What we need to do?

As the plan is natural and technologically possible and in its
largest portion depends more on the private initiatives and less
on the government, my suggestion is the creation of a
nonpolitical Foundation to fight for this plan in the White
House, the Congress, the media, the society, the industries, the
colleges, etc., and naturally to integrate all those sides.

I have the freedom of initiatives in my blood and for me nothing
is more powerful than a very true entrepreneur. After all, those
entrepreneurs created the successful United States, therefore we
need only to repeat the recipe. For ever.

Do You Want To Be A Newbie Forever?

So, do you want to be a newbie forever? Or do you want to make some money online?

So much of the Internet is about Information. Every single day people search for quality information on every topic under the sun.

If you want to be a provider of information and perhaps make a living at it, do you really need to buy one more eBook that claims it will reveal a SECRET about Internet Marketing? Let me be perfectly clear — there are no secrets — there is only good-old-fashioned business principles. The same principles apply whether you are working online or offline. But if you’re new to making a living online, there are specific ways or “secrets” to you, that must be implemented to be successful.

If you are a “newbie” and you think a “list” is something you carry with you to the grocery store, then it’s time to get educated. You must learn and implement “the right system” or you will fail.

The internet is no different than the offline world. You create & sell a product or service with quality. You provide your customers with information they want and need — not what you think will sell. You then market to that specific audience for your product. You build a “relationship” with your customers. You service them like crazy!

However, unlike the offline world, the potential for major sales and profits can happen quickly, if you set everything up the right way. You must sell quality products. You must automate. You must have a list. You must centralize the control of your “system.” You must … if you don’t you will fail! Did you know that something like 95% of the newbies who try to make a living online fail?

Why do they fail? There are millions of reasons. Some are looking to “get rich quick” and don’t really want to work very hard. Or perhaps it’s “information overload” that does them in … Warning — if you are an “information junkie” you are in the most danger of failing. Why? Because you will spend all your time “collecting” rather than “doing” … buying every eBook ever written about how to do this and how to do that and every self-proclaimed “guru” is going to sell you everything they can. Not a pretty picture.

Here’s something critical you really need to know. Are you ready? There are typically four ways you can make money on the internet, discounting all the MLM and “scam” business opportunities out there.

1. Sell other peoples products as an affiliate.
2. Create “content” websites that bring you income through Google Ad Words.
3. Buy/Create and sell your own information products, software etc.
4. Provide a service i.e. design cover graphics, design websites, programming etc.

That’s the major one’s. Secret for success … pick one of these and FOCUS on it until you succeed. If you don’t focus you will not succeed.

As a writer and graphic/book designer, making a living developing Information products is, for me, as natural as breathing. However, this way of making a living is NOT for everyone. Creating “quality” products is hard work and it takes time to learn.

Unfortunately, the Internet is filled with a lot of garbage info products … i.e. a 6 page eBook that lists the wonders of using vinegar to clean things that someone is actually expecting you to pay $10 of your hard earned cash to read.

If you want to learn how to develop and sell your own eBooks, you have a choice. You can slap together that 6 page eBook and try to sell it for $10 — but beware, if you decide to take that route you will fail!

Or you can do it the right way.

There is a right way, and there is a wrong way to develop information products. The world does not need another newbie trying to make a fast buck by putting together or buying resell rights to crappy eBooks that no one wants.

Info Product Development is not for the lazy or quick buck artist. Producing quality takes time and effort. However, the rewards are great and the potential to live the “Internet Lifestyle” with no bosses, no traffic jams and no daily grind is tremendous.

You can succeed. Just don’t plan for it to happen over night. If that is what you are looking for, then go buy a lottery ticket. On the other hand, if you want to do it right and succeed — then get educated, get focused, find what you really want to do and where your talents lie — and then, just do it!

Don’t Trade Rights for Security

“Those who sacrifice essential liberty for temporary safety are not deserving of either liberty or safety.” — Ben Franklin, 1776

In the wake of 9/11 and subsequent terrorist attacks around the world, there is a real temptation to allow the government to take away some of our most precious rights in exchange for greater security. We must resist this temptation. In order to have a free society, there are certain prices that have to be paid. One of those is the possibility that someone will take advantage of our freedom and use it as an opportunity to endanger us. So what if they do? Giving up any part of our freedom is not the answer. In fact, that’s exactly what the terrorists want. When we do that, they win.

The U.S.A. Patriot Act is a step in the wrong direction and could represent a slippery slope toward further erosion of our rights. Write your Representative and Senators and ask them to repeal the U.S.A. Patriot Act and avoid passing similar legislation in the future. If we don’t do something soon, the U.S. could soon have policies similar to many communist, fascist, and Islamic fundamentalist countries, all under the guise of greater security!

People have accused me of being “obsessive and overzealous” on this issue but that’s okay with me. Ask some of the senior citizens in Cuba who have been under Castro’s repressive regime for 45 years how they feel now. I bet many of them wish they would have been a little more “obsessive and overzealous” about their freedom in 1959, instead of standing by passively when the communists took over. Look what it’s gotten them!

If some of those currently under Islamic rule in the Arab world were free to say what they thought about their situations now, I bet many of them would tell you they wish they would have been a little more “obsessive and overzealous” about protecting their freedom instead of sitting by passively and letting the Islamic fundamentalists take over.

What about North Korea? Could a few more “obsessive and overzealous” defenders of freedom have prevented that country becoming the communist threat to the world that it is today?

What about Nazi Germany? Could Hitler’s rise to power have been nipped in the bud if his opponents had been a little more “obsessive and overzealous” instead of being so timid? Could we have used a few more “obsessive and overzealous” defenders of civil liberties in Germany when six million Jews were losing their lives?

What if George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the other Founding Fathers would have just given in to England’s demands instead of being so “obsessive and overzealous” about their freedom? And Patrick Henry? Surely he was an “obsessive and overzealous” person if there ever was one. Why he was even “obsessive and overzealous” enough to say “give me liberty or give me death” and really mean it!

There are plenty of well-meaning but misguided and fearful individuals out there who are lobbying Congress to limit our First and Second Amendment, habeas corpus, and other rights even further. We must let our voices be heard or the voices of those people will be the only ones they hear. It only takes a few minutes to make a difference. Of course, it doesn’t take any time at all to sit back and let your rights completely erode. The choice is yours.

“I would remind you that extremism in defense of liberty is no vice.” — Barry Goldwater, 1964

How Dogpoo is Changing The World

Perhaps a silent revolution is taking place, this time more than ever literally on your doorstep. Irritatingly literally even.

It’s been termed a ‘prank’, it’s been termed ‘borderline legal’, it’s been termed anti social but it simply IS ingenious.
What is? Sticking a miniature US flag into piles of dog poo in public parks.

The trend’s origins are German. Two years of persistent campaigning in Bayreuth Park are driving the police up the wall
especially since the offense has been repeated over 2,000 times. The flag prickers started their evildoing as a protest against
the war in Iraq and the campaign is still going on now. Nobody knows whether the originators are still involved or whether it
has simply caught on. Which makes German police a bit nervous.
They wonder what the motivation is at this moment in time.

But hey, perhaps dog poo creates a dynamic of its own when used as flag poles. We think that it is slightly unnerving though
that this takes place in Germany, a country that is least likely to naturally take a good joke. That is perhaps why the trend has
blown over to safer territory; the US and Canada. The genetic modifications that took place in the process have improved the
trend.

It has been fine tuned it to its new surroundings impressively; Safeguarding the fools thare afraid they might be breaking the
law, people wishing to participate can find out how to do so entirely risk free by following the instructions “Make your own
Bush-Poo flag” on pooprotest.com.

Of course putting a face to the faeces takes all the fun out of the exercise. Yet the trend is far from over and who knows perhaps soon lawmakers will be concerning themselves with matters that are irritating even beyond themselves!

Alito Chided by Senator Kennedy for Application Statement

Senator Edward Kennedy (D., Mass.) questioned Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito regarding statements he made in his 1985 application to be deputy assistant attorney general. (His entire application is available for review at “TheSmokingGun-dot-com,” but the pertinent part is on page two.) The senator specifically asked him about his opposition to abortion and his belief that the U.S. Constitution “does not protect a right to an abortion.”

According to the Associated Press, Kennedy reported Alito replied that he wrote those statements as “a member of the Justice Department that was interested in getting a job.” Kennedy said he then asked Alito, “Why shouldn’t we consider that the answers you’re giving today are an application for another job?” In other words, Mr. Nominee, give it to us straight. Don’t tailor your words to fit your audience; don’t say what you think they want to hear.

Reading over Alito’s application, I agree with his statements. Like him, I am in favor of judicial restraint. I believe in traditional values and am convinced that the Constitution does not protect a woman’s right to have an abortion. Yet I also agree with Kennedy. Alito would command a great deal more respect if he merely said, “I stand by what I wrote in 1985. That document represents my ongoing commitment to interpreting the Constitution according to original intent.”

According to Proverbs 18:4, “The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.” In other words, you usually can’t tell, based on what a person says, what is really in his or her heart. But if the person is truly wise, they will be as transparent as a bubbling brook. Such transparency comes from integrity–a wholeness of being in which there is no conflict, no double-mindedness, no fence-straddling to coddle public opinion.

That’s the kind of integrity Jesus Christ had: the oneness of spirit and purpose that he compared to a lamp burning on a lampstand, not under a basket (Luke 11:33). In the next verses, He challenges us to have the same kind of integrity: “See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you.”

This kind of integrity is what we need in a Supreme Court justice, someone unafraid to hold onto deep convictions, unswayed by public opinion. We need someone who will fully engage in the vigorous debates justices often have behind closed doors, who will be open to the force of legal precedent, to the weight of a logical argument, or to the persuasive power of evidence, regardless of who has the money, the influence, or the prestige. Yet it seems the confirmation process itself has a built-in bias in favor of someone who is colorless and bland, who has no deep convictions, who lacks “bubbling brook” integrity.

We owe it to Judge Alito to consider the testimony of his friends and colleagues–those who know him best. We need to hear what they have to say on his behalf, not just a senator pursuing his own agenda. Want to “go deeper”? Check out “judgealito.com” for more.
