The Essentials Of Norse Mythology

Complex but interesting, Norse mythology is the pre-Christian religion of the Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish peoples. It was mainly rooted from the Old Icelandic writing known as the ‘Elder Edda,’ which unknown sklds wrote centuries before the Christianization of the North. It is multilayered, often contradictory, and reveals a number of parallelisms with other mythologies.

Like any other mythology, Norse mythology has its own version of the world’s creation; but before one can readily understand and imagine this, one needs to know the geography of the world in which the Norse mythological characters existed.

*GEOGRAPHY OF THE WORLD*

According to Norse mythology, the world consisted of three levels: the Upper, the Middle, and the Lower Levels. Distinct lands, which originated from a chasm called Ginnungagap, comprised each level. They were held together by a great tree, named Ygg-drasil.

The Upper Level contained Asgar (The Land of the Aesir), Alfheim (The Land of the Elves), and Vanaheim (The Land of the Vanir). The Middle Level consisted of Midgar (The Land of Human Beings), Jotunheim (The Land of the Giants), Svartalfaheim (The Land of the Dark-Elves), and Nithavellir (The Land of the Dwarves). The Lower Level had Muspell (The Land of Fire) and Niflheim (The Land of Ice and the Dead).

*CREATION OF THE WORLD*

=The Lands of Fire and Ice=

Initially the chasm Ginnungagap separated Muspell and Niflheim. When it eventually closed, fire and ice met and combined to form a cow and the first Giant, named Ymir. The cow, Auumla, survived by licking the salty ice blocks; Ymir depended on her for nourishment. From the licked ice blocks emerged the first human being, Bur, who sired a son named Bor. Ymir, in turn, produced the first Frost Giant male and female out of sweat under his left armpit; from the couple came forth the rest of the Frost Giants. Bor subsequently married the Frost Giant named Bestla, who gave birth to three sons: Odin, Vili, and Vé.

=Odin Created the World=

With the help of his brothers, Odin killed the cruel Ymir. The blood that poured out of the Giant’s body consequently killed most of the Frost Giants. Odin created the world from Ymir’s corpse, the sea from the blood, the earth from the flesh, the sky from the skull, the mountains from the bones, and the trees from the hair. This realm became known as Midgarthe middle worldthe land of human beings. Ymir’s eyebrows served as a protective fence of Midgar. In the ocean that surrounded Midgar dwelled the serpent Jormungan, whose enormous length was enough to circumscribe the middle world by putting its tail into its mouth.

=Then the Dwarves Were Born=

From the Giant Ymir’s decomposing flesh appeared a swarm of maggots, which, by the deities’ decree, acquired a partly human appearance and comprehension. Known as the Dwarves, they lived in Nithavellir, deep down Earth’s caves, tunnels, and mines.

=And So Was Ygg-drasil=

From Ymir’s corpse also grew the great ash tree named Ygg-drasil, whose branches overshadowed the entire world. Ygg-drasil had three roots each going to the world’s three levels. Three springs supplied the roots with water. One root found its way into Asgar, another into Jotunheim, and the last into Niflheim.

=Odin Built Asgar=

In the middle of the world, Odin and his brothers built Asgar, which became the stronghold of the deities and their kindred.

*OTHER ESSENTIAL CHARACTERS IN NORSE MYTHOLOGY*

The Aesir were the race of deities that originated from Odin. Although they lived longer than human beings, they were mortal. They were the deities of consciousness who inhabited the sky.

Baldur was a son of Odin and Frigg. His twin brother, Hor, accidentally killed him because of Loki’s trickery.

Frigg was Odin’s wife. Their union brought forth all the deities that inhabited Asgar.

Loki was a son of a Giant couple. He was supposed to live in Jotunheim; but when he was young, he tricked Odin into allowing him to reside in Asgar and eventually became known as the god of mischief.

Mimir was the brother of Odin’s mother, Bestla. He was the wisest among all beings and the keeper of knowledge. From him came forth the wise Elves.

Thor was Odin and Frigg’s eldest son. The god of thunder, he ruled over the world’s weather. He was famous for his hammer, called Mjlnir, that returned to his hand every time he threw it. With Mjlnir mighty Thor killed many Giants.

Vali was the son of Odin born to avenge his brother Baldur’s death.

The Vanir were the race of deities associated with fertility, prosperity, and eroticism. Njor, Freyr, and Freyja were the progenitor of this race. Regarded as the deities of the earth and biological life, the Vanir were gentler and more concerned with matters of nature than the Aesir. After a long war between themselves, both races settled peacefully and eventually shared Asgar with each other.

ARE YOU PREVENTING YOUR OWN GOOD?

It’s so easy to know what is good for you. You know it is good for you to
eat fruits and vegetables, exercise and drink plenty of water, right? Are
you doing it? Are you doing it regularly enough to feel good about it? Are
you spending quiet time alone with yourself, your thoughts and your goals at
least weekly? Are you paying attention and spending time with those you say
are important to you often enough so they know how much you value the
relationship?

If you can answer ‘Yes’ to these, TERRIFIC! You’re playing on your own
team! If not, why not? Humans are strange. Many of us withhold from
ourselves the very things we know would increase our satisfaction with our
lives, we withhold our good from ourselves. Doesn’t this seem more than a
little masochistic? Why don’t we count with the most important person in
our lives–ourselves?

Sometimes, deep, deep down inside ourselves, we may believe that it is
selfish to give to ourselves. Sometimes, deep, deep down inside ourselves,
we do not believe that we deserve to have a really good life. Sometimes, we
think we’re doing enough by simply saying that we know we should or could do
things. That, somehow, gets us off the hook from actually doing it!

If any of these things are true for you, STOP! Sit right down–yes, right
this minute–and ask yourself why you are preventing your own good. Dig
deep! Stay with it until you have an answer. Discuss it with your closest
friend. Find out what’s going on with you. Why are you withholding your
good from yourself?

Then, begin with TTDC’s. If you haven’t heard about my trademarked system
yet, TTDC stands for “Teeny, Tiny, Do-Able Chunks”. Start with the smallest
increment of time and energy…but START!!! If it is exercise, start by
doing ten minutes a day of something that you would call exercise*. If it is
cleaning your clutter, start with one shelf or one drawer a day. If it is
improving your relationship, spend ten minutes a day talking to that
important person with nothing else happening at the same time! You get the
idea. You’re in charge.

You deserve to be happy, healthy and on your own team. Let nothing stop
you. Start now!

* If you find that ten minutes is more than think you can fit it, what’s
going on? Maybe you need some personal help to discover your blocks to your
own good.

Bryan Ellis’ thoughts on The Virtualization Of The Real Estate Industry

Landlords and rehabbers take notice - you may soon be focused on the new concepts of “Virtual Real Estate Investing“. What is meant by “Virtual Real Estate Investing” ranges from online games like SecondLife (where real profit can be made) to the use of internet technologies to make normal real estate investors more profitable.

To get the facts, I sought out the man generally considered to be the father of virtual real estate investing: Bryan Ellis of BryanEllis.com.

Ellis says he adopted the term “virtual real estate investing” sometime before Y2K after he realized that making money online is conceptually very similar to making money with physical real estate.

One example of the parallels between virtual and physical real estate Bryan Ellis cites is the similarity between the monetization of domain names versus physical property. He points out that control of a domain name or even a specific web page is much like controlling a real estate property ” those assets can be monetized in similar ways: By selling them for a profit, by leasing them, by offering advertising, etc.

The similarities really are obvious. After all, if you own a valuable piece of real estate, it’s “valuable” because other people are interested in that specific piece of property. Likewise, if you own a desirable domain name, others will find value in it because it serves their purposes. In either case, you could sell or lease the asset and turn it into cash.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing, Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

The Co-Worker from Hell

Every office has one - the co-worker from hell. There is no magic spell to turn them into Prince/Princess Charming, but there are some strategies you can use that will make working with them a little easier.
Every office has one… the co-worker from hell. That one person who rubs everyone up the wrong way, is uncooperative, unpleasant, disagreeable… well, you get the picture. There is no magic spell that can turn them into Prince and Princess Charmings, but there are some strategies you can try that might help to make working with them less stressful.

You are all on the same team. Despite your differences, you do rely on each other and are thrown together on a daily basis to achieve joint goals. So, if you first try to think of your work unit as a “team”, and the unpleasant person as part of that team for better or for worse, then you are one step towards finding harmony.

Do you know their ’story’? You don’t know the real story behind your co-worker’s unpleasantness. We are not all on the same level of evolution and it could be he/she does not have your skills or ability to cope with stresses and problems in their life, problems that you may know nothing about. There may be a very good explanation for the chip being carried on their shoulders. This does not excuse their behavior, but may explain it or make it easier to live with.

Don’t take it personally. Ignore any unpleasant behavior that is exhibited when you can and keep the lines of communication open. When this worker realizes that they are not getting a rise out of you, they will tire of the effort and “settle down”. When they realize that regardless of what they say and do, you are still open and positive with them, you will gradually notice a change in the way they deal with you.

Maintain your own dignity. Treat this co-worker with respect. It is not up to you to be judge and jury and decide on his/her worthiness - the fact he/she is a human being sharing the planet to learn and experience should be enough in itself. This means remaining pleasant and honest with them. Don’t talk behind their back. Keep your own communications and interaction with them friendly and respectful.

Are you totally innocent? For all you know, it could be a mannerism or behavioral trait of your own that sets this co-worker off. Think about the situations in which conflict has arisen… have you said or done anything that may have contributed to it? Do you react defensively all the time to this person’s comments or behavior, taking everything personally? Do you hold grudges? Do your facial features or tone of voice tell this co-worker that you don’t think much of them? Without being aware of it, are you putting this person down? What message, subliminal or otherwise, do you convey in your interactions with this person?

Live and let live. Don’t expect this co-worker, or any other person for that matter, to work the same as you, or be the same as you in other ways. Everybody is different. What you may see as laziness, may simply be a more laid-back, relaxed approach to work and life, or it may be a lack of confidence or a fear of failure holding your co-worker back. Observe them discreetly to see if this is the case. Maybe an offer to help them would work wonders. If you are something of a control freak, or somebody who thinks things should be done in a certain way because “you” believe that is the best way, then maybe the problem is really with you…

Making an effort. If your co-worker seems suspicious with your “new” attempts to build a better working relationship and asks you why you’re acting differently, you can deflect any potential new problems by turning it around and saying something like, “I thought perhaps I may have been a little difficult to work with, and I’m trying to be better.” Even if you’ve been an absolute angel and the co-worker from hell has been the bad-guy all along, this type of response will not make matters worse, and may, in fact, cause them to ponder their own shortcomings and make an effort to do better themselves.

Make them feel worthy. You never know, this co-worker may be intimidated by you, your age or experience. Maybe, in some way, you make him/her feel less worthy, insignificant. Try including them in projects… ask for their opinions. You don’t have to use their suggestions, but the simple act of asking and sincerely considering it will make them feel better about themselves and their position. Many times, these troublesome co-workers are lashing out for reasons they perhaps don’t quite understand themselves.

Look for common ground. Do look at the way you interact with others in your department or organization and compare this with your interactions with the troublesome co-worker. Chances are a pattern has been established of which both of you may not be consciously aware. It is very difficult sometimes, but it is crucial not to be judgmental. Try to find things you may have in common that will permit friendly small talk. Even an opening question about a sports game that was held on the weekend may help - provided you both support the same team!

Keep your sense of humor. Remember, you don’t have to marry this person… just work with them. Try instilling a little humor into uncomfortable situations rather than reacting defensively or aggressively or emotionally.

Find out what you can about this co-worker. Discreetly! Are they excluded from social gatherings, or are they ’shy’ and stay away? Why not encourage them to participate in company functions… offer to accompany them (many co-workers from hell are really insecure inside!)

You could try the direct approach. Just come straight out and say “Okay, this has gone on long enough. Let’s bury the hatchet and start over.” And in the same breath you might suggest lunch together. This approach is likely to startle and stun them… don’t be surprised if they do goldfish impersonations.

Ignore them. If all else fails, it is not your responsibility to ’save’ this co-worker, and if simple remedies have no effect, it may be necessary to simply ignore this co-worker’s shenanigans and only deal with them when you have to.

Call in the Big Guns. If things are that unpleasant that you’re thinking of quitting, then maybe you need to have H.R. management step in. Maybe a strong word from upper management will have a more immediate effect than anything you can do or say, especially if your co-worker is a real bully or very unpleasant to work with.

Never play their game. Whatever you do, never resort to name-calling, insults, sarcasm, or use any of the types of tools they have in their arsenal to fling at you. Refuse to buy into their ‘game’… it is “their” game - not yours!

The Benefits of Swiss Rolex Replicas

Of the 5 grades of Rolex replicas, the Swiss are considered to be the best. The five grades of Rolex Replicas are Swiss (the best, Grade 1), Japanese (very good, Grades 2-4) and Chinese (the cheapest and worst, Grade 5).

The weight of the Swiss Rolex Replica is almost exactly the same as a genuine Rolex. They are noticeably heavy because of the quality of the materials. If the watch is too light for its size, it’s not a Swiss Rolex replica.

The crystal of Swiss replicas is genuine sapphire crystal. Sapphire crystal is a type of glass that is many times better at resisting scratches than regular glass.

Swiss replicas are usually water-resistant for 100 feet (30 meters) diving, and the jewel movement is among the best.

Given all of these superior traits, it makes sense that the Swiss Rolex Replica should be the most expensive of all replicas. Indeed, the wholesale price is between $500 and $700, and the retail ranges from $675 to $1800. Consumers should expect a one-year warranty, just like the genuine Rolex.

It is perfectly legal to posses Rolex replicas. However, some manufacturers that produce imitations may be in violation of copyright and trademark laws.

The 21st Century Speaker’s Journey

Everyone who creates personal success as a 21st century speaker-is a hero. We battle with dragons. We grapple with demons. With emotional and psychological monsters. Like Theseus embroiled in the maze on the island of Crete, millennia ago, wrestling with, and slaying the dreaded Minotaur. Like David facing Goliath armed with only a slingshot and 5 smooth stones. Like Hercules rescuing Theseus and Persephone from Hades.

In the last century, like Harry Truman, a sure loser according to every poll, bravely facing up to and defeating the powerful Thomas Dewey. Like Mahatma Gandhi, armed with only a loincloth and a relentless will, freeing the Indian subcontinent from British rule. And let’s not forget the gallant Nelson Mandela who, battling from his bleak jail cell ultimately ended apartheid in South Africa, winning emancipation and equality for millions of his native people.

What about the speaker? What about the aspiring speaker…the lonely, aching one out in the cold, with nose pressed up against the store window, gazing wistfully at glowing success only a heartbeat away; what are this speaker’s demons? What dragons, what Minatour, what swamps swarming with alligators, what precipices and crevasses wait to swallow up all the wanna-be’s hopes and dreams? What else blocks the illusive path to success and abundance?

And, most important of all, how are all these monsters put to rest forever by the speaker moving from struggle and lack to success and abundance. I’ve been there, dead broke, flat on my assets, and those only in my unswerving imagination, sustained only by vision. Perhaps this glimpse of my journey may yield hope:

1. It started with implacable will, iron determination, bulldog blood, an inner spirit that was not going to surrender to defeat as long as there was breath in my body.

2. It proceeded with the awakening awareness that like all activities, the speaking business had rules of play, rules I had to discover and master.

3. It continued with relentless research. The fruit of this investigation was, for me, the insight that 80% of success in the business of speaking had nothing to do with platform performance. Beyond platform excellence, speaking success emerged from having a unique position, a burning desire, a mission so powerful that the mission had me, alluring promotion, magnetic marketing, a bit of wit and a colossal commitment, so huge that everything was surrendered in the service of the success yearned for.

4. Then, on top of all of that it took ceaseless work, unending hours engaging the wisdom I harvested. First to discover how to direct market my services, then to master indirect marketing, to experience the indescribable joy of hearing my phone ring. Imagine having decision-makers calling you to ask if you can speak for them! There’s nothing like it.

5. After that, with bookings flowing in, I had to learn how to present programs much like the fabled Chinese meal. Programs that left audiences satisfied yet hungry for more, and then more again.

6. Let’s not forget marketing graphics, appropriate for the fees at the time. These are to be updated and revised often as the level of programs evolves and as the letters of commendation are received.

7. Finally, and really first in importance, spirit, love, caring, acceptance of the mantle of power along with accountability for the judicious use of that power. The privilege of the platform is an awesome responsibility. We influence lives. We affect market penetration, sales and profits of companies, and the return their shareholders enjoy. We ease the way. We give people hope. We are light- bearers.

And when we surrender to our higher purpose, when we give ourselves to our intentions, we may just find ourselves living in a state of euphoria. We may find inner peace, a sense of rightness about how we are engaging our energy. We may even know we’ve found what the Buddhists call our right livelihood.

Is Firefox For Everyone?

Oh my… I can see the rotten tomatoes flying my way already. But I have a confession to make. I’ve tried Firefox on numerous occasions but I’m sticking with Internet Explorer, at least for now…

“I Use Internet Explorer, And I Feel Fine!”

Why? There are a bunch of reasons. First off, I’m just not convinced that Firefox is any guarantee of better online safety. Sure, there have been some nasty bugs in Explorer, but if you run Windows Update on autopilot, along with up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware software, there are no serious exposures that I’m aware of.

And Firefox has not proven to be immune to security breaches. If you’re not running the very latest version, you could be at risk. As Firefox grows in popularity, it will become a more interesting target for hackers and crackers. In other words, as more people begin to use Firefox, there will be more security bugs uncovered.

RELATED NEWS: http://www.hotnews360.com/computer-security-news.html

Another biggie: There is no way to combine toolbars. With IE, one can conserve screen real estate by putting two more more toolbars on a single line. In Firefox, toolbars that only consume a portion of a line have to be there all alone. It’s a waste of screen space.

I also am annoyed that the fonts display differently on Firefox. Come on… Arial 11-pt should look the same no matter what program is running. And CSS elements just don’t render correctly in some cases. Oh, I hear the shrill cries. “But Firefox is 100% CSS compliant! It’s IE that has all the CSS bugs.” Sorry, do a little searching and you’ll see there are plenty of CSS rendering (not compliance) anomalies on both sides of the browser fence.

I’ve also had numerous problems installing plugins. Firefox keeps telling me to install Internet Explorer, the Windows Media Player and other stuff I already have, just to make some silly plugin work. (And ummm, isn’t the whole idea of using Firefox to GET AWAY from Explorer?) And then there’s the “Firefox uses 100% of the CPU” problem, which remains unsolved.

By all means, give Firefox a try, if only to prove to yourself that you can live without Microsoft owning everything on your desktop. I don’t deny that Firefox is an excellent browser, and it has some cool features like tabbed browsing that you may love. And I’ll admit that it may be a better choice for some users. For not me, at least not yet. If it’s any consolation, I did switch from Outlook Express to Thunderbird. :-)

Ski Holidays for the Eco Minded Traveler

Hundreds of avid snowboarders will soon be dusting down their ski pants and scooting forth looking for the biggest snow.

And beyond any doubt the result of our carbon footprint will be almost as far down the list of holiday musts as a Christmas tree after Christmas.

Only last Christmas, a tardy snowfall made the the tabloids and tourists were panic struck about the bits of snow dissolving nearly as soon as they put down.

Skiing holiday organisation Chalet1802, based at the foot of Mount Blanc in Chamonix in the Alps, is one of the first autonomous businesses to go carbon neutral and offer snowboarders an environmentally friendly option while booking their skiing holidays.

Chalet1802 proprietor Delmar said: Last season was quite a surprise with the most warm wintertime in sixty yrs in France. French resorts such as Chatel, La Clusaz and Megeve lacked clients. It was warm and the snow did not last so a lot of the early winter skiing season in the mountains was uneven. We resolved to become carbon negative to assist in the preservation the ski resort.

Delmar said: We’re not trying to prescribe to clients but we consider it is crucial to give the guests the option without increasing the price of the holiday. If the client book with us and vacations in our Chamonix luxury chalet they may further off set their carbon output and we take in the additional costs. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub - guests require luxuriousness but not at the expense of the environment, so we viewed ways of reducing the results of a skier driving over here for a winter holiday.”

The business have also joined with group Climate Care, which attacks global warming by making C02 deductions on behalf of people and firms.
